MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team dropped a pair of closely-contested contests with the
Rockford College Regents 5-4 and 4-2 Saturday at Neumann Family
Field.
The Warriors went hitless through the first three innings of the
first game as the visiting Regents built a 4-0 advantage after
three and one-half innings. RC accounted for seven of its 12 hits
during the third and fourth inning when it plated two runs during
each frame.
WLC cut its deficit in half in the fourth when it scored twice
off of two errors and one hit. Rockford's final run came in the
sixth off a solo homerun to left for a 5-2 lead.
The Warriors got their run back in the seventh on an RBI single
from Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) which plated Ethan
Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran). WLC left two runners
on base in the inning.
In the ninth, WLC put two runners on base before Day singled
home Geis for a second time. However, the game ended when Cody
Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) was thrown out on a close
play advancing to third base on the single.
Day, Geis and Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) each
collected two hits in the game for the Warriors. On the mound, Alex
Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) struck out seven batters in 6.0
innings. Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
pitched the final 3.0 innings of scoreless relief.
Rockford scored first again in game two, plating two unearned
runs in the first inning and another in the second inning on three
hits. Following the Regents' final tally on another unearned run in
the fourth, the Warriors scored twice on a wild pitch and RBI
groundout to cut their deficit in half.
The score stood the rest of the game, but not before the
Warriors threatened in the ninth. Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East
Troy) and Geis led off the inning with a single and a double.
However, the next three Warriors were retired in order and both
runners were stranded in scoring position.
Ferrell and Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) each finished
2-for-4 for the Warriors. Josh Smith (Appleton, Wis./East) pitched
all 9.0 innings on the mound for WLC. He allowed four runs, but
just one earned and scattered 12 hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-9, 4-2 NAC) will next travel to
Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill., Sunday at 1 p.m. for a NAC
doubleheader against the Eagles.
