MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team suffered a sweep to Northern Athletics
Conference-leading and nationally-ranked Concordia University
Chicago (30-7, 18-2 NAC) Friday afternoon at Neumann Family Field
by the scores of 13-3 and 7-5.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Cougars took an early
lead by scoring one run in the first, two in the third and another
in the fifth for a 4-0 lead. WLC put its first run on the board in
the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Pollesch (Markesan,
Wis./Markesan) doubled home Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran).
CUC added five more in the top of the sixth inning to take a
commanding 9-1 lead. The Warriors responded with their final two
runs in the bottom of the frame. Matt Lang (East Troy, Wis./East
Troy) drove home Josh Ferrell (Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) on an
RBI double, while a Martin RBI sac fly plated Justin Barkhurst
(Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) to narrow the lead to 9-3. The
Cougars plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning and won
the game after seven innings as WLC was unable to score in its
final frame.
Freshman pitcher Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) took the
loss for WLC. Pollesch led the offensive attack by going 3-for-4
with an RBI. Lang and Martin also added RBIs on 1-for-3 and 1-for-2
hitting, respectively.
Both teams got on the board early in the second game of the
doubleheader. After allowing two runs in the top of the first, WLC
added two of its own from an RBI double by Barkhurst and an RBI
single from Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) even the score at
2-2.
After a scoreless top of the second, the Warriors added two more
in the bottom half for a 4-2 lead behind a two-run single from
Ferrell. CUC responded in the third with two tallies of its own to
tie the game again at 4-4.
The Cougars added three runs in the top of the fifth to take a
7-4 advantage. WLC plated its final run in the bottom of the eighth
inning on an Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) solo
homerun to left field.
Despite throwing a complete game, Garrick Day (Elk Mound,
Wis./Elk Mound) was handed the loss for the Warriors. Barkhurst was
a red hot 4-for-4 at the plate, including two doubles and an RBI.
Ferrell added two RBI, while Schoen and Geis each added one.
Wisconsin Lutheran (17-21, 8-12 NAC) closes out its 2011 season
Saturday afternoon by hosting Maranatha Baptist Bible College
(2-23, 0-20 NAC) in a 12 p.m. doubleheader at Neumann Family Field.
Sunday marks the final games for seniors Barkhurst, Ferrell, Geis,
Lang and Pollesch.
