MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team concluded its 2011 season Saturday afternoon at
Neumann Family Field by sweeping Northern Athletics Conference
opponent Maranatha Baptist Bible College 11-6 and 11-2 on Senior
Day.
Wisconsin Lutheran grabbed a quick 1-0 in the first game of the
doubleheader after Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) singled home
Justin Barkhurst (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) in the first
inning. Maranatha took its only lead of the game in the second when
it plated three runs on two hits for a 3-1 advantage.
The Crusaders lead did not last long however as the Warriors
scored five times in the third frame off of four hits to jump in
front 6-3. WLC received run-scoring hits from Barkhurst, Matt Lang
(East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Ethan Geis (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) during the five-run frame.
Both teams followed with scoreless innings in the fourth and
fifth before the visitors tied the score up at 6-6 in the sixth
with three runs on two hits. WLC quickly responded again in the
bottom of the inning with three runs of its own for a 9-6 lead.
Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton), Josh Ferrell
(Cocoa, Fla./Temple Christian) and Schoen each added RBIs in the
inning for the Warriors.
WLC's final two tallies of the game came from a Ryan Pollesch
(Markesan, Wis./Markesan) RBI single in the seventh and a Lang RBI
double in the eighth for the 11-6 final.
Barkhurst, Schoen and Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) each went 3-for-5 in the opener. Schoen, Lang and
Geis drove in two runs apiece, while Barkhurst scored three times.
Lang collected his team-leading fifth win of the season after
throwing a complete game and striking out seven.
In their final game of the season, the Warriors scored at least
one run in each of the first six innings to account for all of
their 11 runs in the game. WLC only allowed Maranatha to score
single runs in the fourth and sixth.
Geis led nine Warriors with hits in the game by going 3-for-5
with two RBI and one run scored. Nevils added three RBI and Lang
scored three times. WLC finished with 14 hits for the game.
Alex Nikolai (South Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) tossed six
strong innings, allowing seven hits and just two earned runs to
collect the win for the Warriors. Steve Gustafson (West Bend,
Wis./Luther Preparatory) earned the save by pitching the final
three innings. He gave up just two hits and fanned four.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which honored seniors Barkhurst, Ferrell,
Geis, Lang and Pollesch before the game, finishes its 2011 season
19-21 overall and 10-12 in the NAC. The Warriors' 19 wins tied a
school record that was first achieved in 2002.
