HOLLAND, Mich. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team fell 28-14 to the Hope College Flying Dutchmen
Saturday afternoon in non-conference action in front of 3,125 fans
at Holland Municipal Stadium.
The Flying Dutchmen (1-1) got off to a fast after scoring on two
of their first three possessions for an early 14-0 lead.
Hope got the scoring started on its first drive of the game,
taking the ball 70 yards on eight plays capped off by a Fluarry
Jackson 14-yard touchdown run, putting WLC in 7-0 hole.
The Warriors stopped Hope on its second drive of the game, but
the Flying Dutchmen needed only three plays on their third drive,
scoring on a Shawn Jackson 42-yard run for the 14-0 score.
The second quarter proved to be more friendly to Wisconsin
Lutheran as it tightened things up with 11:33 remaining in the half
when junior running back Taylor Pelot (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Campbellsport) scored from one-yard out bringing the score to
14-7. The Warriors used 10 plays to go 65 yards on the scoring
drive.
The forest green and white played outstanding defense in the
second quarter, allowing just 37 yards over three Hope possessions.
The score stood 14-7 in favor of the Flying Dutchmen at
halftime.
Hope would build its lead back up to 14 points in the third
quarter when quarterback Michael Atwell found Luke Petersen for an
11-yard score with 2:27 remaining in the quarter for a 21-7
score.
The Warriors cut the deficit back to seven when junior
quarterback Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) found Josh
Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) for a 56-yard touchdown pass as WLC
capped off an impressive 10 play, 96-yard drive.
The WLC defense made a key stop on Hope's next possession for a
chance to drive down the field and knot things up late in the
fourth quarter. Hope's defense proved tough, however, forcing an
interception to stop the Warriors momentum.
The Flying Dutchmen would score five plays later on an Atwell
one-yard run for the 28-14 advantage. Another interception by the
Hope defense with 3:47 left would seal the deal as the Flying
Dutchmen held on for the 14-point victory.
Shaw finished the game throwing for 178 yards, 75 of those to
Stodola. The Warriors racked up 260 yards of total offense, while
Hope finished the contest with 370 yards.

the Warriors defense with 13 tackles. Freshman Josh Gordon
(Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) and senior Willie Johnson (Delray
Beach, Fla./American Heritage) each finished with a sack for the
forest green and white.
