MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team was defeated 42-13 by non-conference opponent Ripon
College Saturday night at Raabe Stadium. The Red Hawks converted
three Warriors turnovers into touchdowns and used a 22-point third
quarter to defeat WLC.
The game started out well for the Warriors as they were able to
drive deep into Ripon territory on their first possession of the
game. Following a botched snap, however, junior quarterback Zach
Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) was intercepted on a 3rd and 20
play by Ripon defender Tim Schalz. On their first offensive play,
the Red Hawks' Brad Johnson rushed 42 yards down to the Warriors'
18-yard line. Quarterback Matt Miller was able to cap off the drive
with a three-yard touchdown run to put the Red Hawks in front 7-0
at the 5:41 mark of the opening quarter.
The Warriors were able to even the score at 7-7 when freshman
Brandyn Cockroft (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) flew in to
block a punt in Ripon's end zone and recovered it for a touchdown
with 1:36 left in the first quarter.
The Red Hawks were able to counter that score later in the
second quarter after a Jason Kramer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) fumbled punt gave Ripon great field position. The Red
Hawks went in front on a 16-yard touchdown run and then added a
late first-half field goal for a 17-7 halftime lead over the
Warriors.
Ripon broke open the contest with a 22-point third quarter and
had three different players rush into the end zone in the
period.
Wisconsin Lutheran found the end zone early in the fourth
quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by senior Jesse Muldrow
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran). The Red Hawks added a 22-yard
field goal with 7:21 left in the game to account for the rest of
the scoring.
Shaw finished 11-of-18 through the air for 127 yards, but was
plagued by two interceptions. Junior Taylor Pelot (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Campbellsport) rushed nine times for 44 yards to lead the
ground attack. Muldrow was right behind with 43 yards. Senior Matt
Lopata (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) caught three passes for 45 yards to
lead all receivers. Defensively, sophomore Eric Zeitler (Waukesha,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) collected a game-high eight tackles.
Ripon had five players combine to rush for 392 yards and five
touchdowns. WLC was out-gained in total offensive yards,
442-238.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-1) travels to Holland, Mich., next
Saturday to face Hope College (0-1) for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff at
Holland Municipal Stadium. The Flying Dutchmen were defeated 35-0
by Illinois Wesleyan in their season opener on Saturday.
