MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team fell to Edgewood College Tuesday night 3-0 at
Breese Stevens Field in Madison. The match was the conference
opener for both squads.
Edgewood (3-0, 1-0 NAC), which is ranked seventh in the latest
NSCAA Central Regional Rankings, netted all three of its goals
within the first 18:51 of play to build an early lead in the
contest.
Warriors sophomore goalkeeper Mel Lemke (Brookfield,
Wis./Central) made 13 saves in the match as WLC was outshot 28-1.
Lemke made nine saves in the opening half and stopped all four
shots she saw in the final 45 minutes.
The Eagles' Elaine Gerry scored the first two goals of the game,
her eighth and ninth of the season, to give Edgewood a 2-0
lead.
Gerry's first goal, assisted by Ashley Alonso, was scored 8:01
into play, putting the Warriors in an early 1-0 hole.
Gerry then found the back of the net again with 14:42 on the
clock off assists from Emily Berns and Molly Haertle to give the
Eagles a 2-0 advantage. Berns tacked on the final goal to make the
final margin 3-0.
From there the Warriors played the Eagles even as both teams
were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.
The only WLC shot attempt of the game came off the foot of
sophomore Maggie Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn).
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2, 0-1 NAC) will return to the pitch on
Friday when it travels to Mankato, Minn., to face Bethany Lutheran
College. Game time at BLC Soccer Field is set for 7 p.m.
