AURORA, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
football team intercepted four passes and had 157 rushing yards
from Mike Reeves (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) en route
to a 28-14 Northern Athletics Conference win over Aurora Saturday
at Vago Field in Aurora, Ill.
The Warriors first got on the scoreboard with 5:55 remaining in
the opening quarter when senior running back Taylor Pelot (Fond du
Lac, Wis./Campbellsport) ran one in from 15 yards out giving WLC a
7-0 advantage. The 11-play, 66-yard scoring drive was set up by a
Richard Belskey (Cedarburg, Wis./Milwaukee Lutheran)
interception.
WLC added to its lead in the second quarter when it scored two
touchdowns over the final 5:03 of the first half to take a 21-0
lead into halftime. Zach Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) snuck
one in from one yard out to give WLC a 13-0 lead. Shaw later found
tight end John Klein (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) for a
40-yard touchdown with 1:50 left in the half. Donavin Tucker
(Brookfield, Wis./East) caught a pass from Shaw for the two-point
conversion play for a 21-0 advantage.
Aurora cut into the Warriors lead in the third quarter when
Jimmy Bevell hooked up with Ryan Mizgate for a 15-yard touchdown
making the score 21-7 with 5:08 remaining.
WLC pushed its lead back to 21 early in the fourth quarter when
Shaw found Josh Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) for an 11-yard
touchdown with 14:55 remaining in the game. The touchdown pass was
the ninth time Shaw and Stodola have connected in the end zone this
season. Aurora added a late touchdown making the final score
28-14.
The Warriors pass defense, ranked first in NCAA Division III,
continued their strong play as they held AU to 174 yards passing
and forced four interceptions. Belsky, Jim Wheeler (Crystal Falls,
Mich./Forest Park), Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) and Sam
Dunham (Winneconne, Wis./Winneconne) each intercepted passes for
WLC. Jason Kramer (Oconomowoc, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) paced the
Warriors defense with a team-high 10 tackles.
Reeves finished the game with a career-high 157 yards on 34
carries in leading the Wisconsin Lutheran offense. Shaw threw for
129 yards and two scores, while Klein led WLC pass catchers with
four receptions for 71 yards.
Aurora (3-3, 2-1 NAC) was led by Mizgate's five receptions for
68 yards, while Bevell threw for 120 yards. Christian Mayen led all
players with 12 tackles.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-2, 2-1 NAC) returns home next
Saturday when it hosts Benedictine (3-3, 1-2 NAC) at Raabe Stadium.
Kickoff between the Warriors and Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
