MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team fell in the 108th minute of double overtime in
Wednesday's Northern Athletics Conference game with Concordia
Chicago as the Cougars escaped with a 1-0 win at Concordia
Stadium.
It was CUC's Hillary Campbell who netted the game-winning goal
with 2:07 remaining in the second overtime as she scored on a
header off a pass from Shawna Rembold to give the Cougars the
one-goal victory.
The contest featured great defense and physical play as 31 fouls
were called between the two teams.
The Warriors controlled the opening half as they outshot CUC 4-1
in the first 45 minutes of play. The only save made in the first
half was by Concordia Chicago's keeper Callie Hasselbring.
The second half saw the offense shift more towards CUC as the
host Cougars outshot WLC, 8-4. Warriors goalkeeper Kate Gucinski
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) made three second-half saves
to send the game into overtime. The first overtime saw just one
shot, taken by CUC.
For the game, WLC attempted nine shots compared to 13 for
Concordia Chicago (7-7-1, 5-6-0 NAC). Maggie Smith (Elkhorn,
Wis./Elkhorn) fired three shots to lead Wisconsin Lutheran.
Campbell led all players with seven shots for CUC.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-7-3, 3-5-1 NAC) returns to the pitch
Saturday when it hosts Lakeland (3-11-0, 2-7-0 NAC). The Senior Day
game between the Warriors and Muskies is set to start at 1 p.m. at
Warrior Field.
