ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's soccer team had its best offensive performance of the
season Wednesday afternoon, blanking Rockford 6-0 at Sam Greeley
Field.
It took until the 26:49 mark, but the Warriors tallied their
first goal of the game when Mandy Schnell (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin
Luther) netted her second goal of the season, putting WLC on top
1-0. Sarah Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) recorded
an assist on the Schnell goal.
Wisconsin Lutheran went in front 2-0 just over five minutes
later when Megume Poetter (Federal Way, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran)
tallied her first goal of the season, scoring unassisted at the
32:09 mark.
The 2-0 lead remained until halftime
as Wisconsin Lutheran dominated possession in the opening half,
out-shooting the Regents 15-0. Rockford goalkeeper Catherine
Holesha recorded five first-half saves.
Freshman Katie Bentz (Cambridge, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran)
scored the Warriors' third goal of the game at the 55:38 mark and
Schnell netted her second goal of the contest just over three
minutes later giving WLC a comfortable 4-0 lead. Stephaney Scott
(Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) was credited with an assist
on the Schnell goal.
WLC added two goals in the final three minutes of play, courtesy
of Cari Westover (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and Mel Lemke (Brookfield,
Wis./Central) as the Warriors rolled to a 6-0 victory. Laura Kent
(Iron Mountain, Mich./Iron Mountain) notched an assist on the
Westover goal, which was her first score of the season.
Wisconsin Lutheran continued its dominance in shots as it
out-shot Rockford (0-9-0, 0-7-0 NAC) 25-0 for the contest. Heather
Nielsen (Wildwood, Fla./Villages) fired four shots to lead WLC.
Holesha had eight saves for the Regents, while Kate Gucinski
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) picked up her fifth win of the
season in net for the Warriors.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-6-2, 2-4-0 NAC) returns to action Saturday
when it visits Maranatha (4-7-0, 2-4-0 NAC) for a NAC game. Game
time between the Warriors and Crusaders is set for 2 p.m. at
Maranatha Field in Watertown, Wis.
