WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's soccer team won its third consecutive game Saturday
as they defeated Maranatha 4-1 in a Northern Athletics Conference
contest at Maranatha Field.
The Warriors had the offense rolling early Saturday as they
scored all four of their goals in the opening half. It didn't take
long for WLC to get on the scoreboard as Maggie Gartner
(Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) scored just 4:28 into play off a corner
kick from Sarah Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) for
an early 1-0 lead.
Wisconsin Lutheran pushed its lead to 2-0 at the 20:14 mark as
Megume Poetter (Federal Way, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) netted her
second goal of the season, scoring off an assist from Heather
Nielsen (Wildwood, Fla./Villages). The Warriors added another score
8:36 later when Katie Bentz (Cambridge, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran)
beat the keeper to give WLC a 3-0 lead. Kolander added her second
assist of the game on the Bentz goal.
With just under eight minutes remaining in the first half, the
Warriors added their fourth and final goal as Nicole DiSalvo
(Waterford, Wis./Waterford) tallied her first goal of the season
allowing the Warriors to head into halftime with a comfortable 4-0
lead. Bentz was credited with an assist on the DiSalvo goal.
The four WLC goals in the first half came on just six shots as
the Warriors out-shot the Crusaders 6-3. There were no saves made
in the opening half as none of the Crusaders shots were on goal and
Wisconsin Lutheran scored on all four of its shots on net.
Maranatha scored its lone goal of the contest at the 75:51 mark
when Jocelyn Enrique notched her sixth goal of the season, scoring
unassisted to make the final score read 4-1.
The Crusaders (4-9-0, 2-6-0 NAC) out-shot WLC for the game as
they held a slight 11-8 advantage in shots. Poetter and Maggie
Smith (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) led Wisconsin Lutheran with two shots
apiece, while Enrique led all players with three shots for MBBC.
Kate Gucinski (Appleton,Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) made two saves to
pick up her sixth win of the season while her counterpart, Michala
Marino, also made two saves in the loss.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-6-2, 3-4-0 NAC) will try and push its win
streak to four games when it travels to face Benedictine (5-7-1,
4-4-0 NAC) Tuesday. The Warriors and Eagles are set to begin at 7
p.m. at the Lisle-BenU Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.
