MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team fell victim to a late Bethany Lutheran
run and the visiting Vikings escaped the Recreation Complex with a
68-63 non-conference win Saturday.
The game's opening half was a back-and-forth affair with the
lead changing five times in the first 10 minutes of play. Wisconsin
Lutheran held a six-point lead with 13:22 remaining after a Tim
Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) three-pointer, but BLC
went on a 12-2 run to take a 19-15 lead at the 9:46 mark of the
first half. The visiting Vikings held the lead for the remainder of
the first half as WLC trailed by three points, 33-30, at
halftime.
Demuth had nine first-half points to lead the Warriors at the
break, while the Vikings' Garet Tucker led all scorers with 14
first-half points. WLC shot just 37 percent (10-for-21) in the
first half compared to 52 percent (11-for-21) for Bethany
Lutheran.
The score remained in the Vikings favor for the opening 15
minutes of the second half as they held a 57-49 lead with 6:56
remaining in the game. WLC then went a 12-1 run over the next
three-plus minutes to take a 61-58 lead with 3:37 on the clock.
That lead unfortunately would not hold for the Warriors as BLC
closed the game on a 10-2 run en route to the five-point win.
Demuth finished with a game-high 17 points for the Warriors,
while Nate Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) added 13
points. Brett Lubbe pulled down a team-best eight rebounds as the
Warriors and Vikings tied the rebounding battle, 32-32. For the
game, the Warriors shot 36.8 percent (21-for-57), including only 24
percent (6-for-25) from beyond the arc.
Bethany Lutheran (2-2) was led by Tucker's 16 points in just 17
minutes of action. Gavin Kroehler and Derek Peterson added 14 and
12 points, respectively. BLC shot 55 percent (22-for-40) for the
game and made 18 of its 26 free-throw attempts.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3, 0-0 NAC) returns to action Tuesday when
it hosts Aurora (1-3, 0-0 NAC) in the conference opener for both
teams. The Warriors and Spartans are set for a 7 p.m. tip-off at
the Recreation Complex. Fans can follow the action via live audio,
