RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team used a big advantage off turnovers and a strong second-half finish as it defeated Dominican 66-59 Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Conference game at the Igini Sports Forum. The win was the second straight victory for WLC.

The Warriors held a four-point advantage after one half of play as neither team could build much of an edge in the first 20 minutes of play. Dominican made the first run of the game, building a first-half best six-point lead at 13-7 with 12:28 remaining in the half before the Warriors responded with a 6-0 run with four points coming from sophomore Kyle Stelse (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran). The score was knotted at 13-13 with 11 minutes remaining in the half.

WLC grabbed its first lead of the game with 5:37 left in the first half when sophomore Brett Lubbe's (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) layup gave the visitors a 19-18 advantage. WLC scored six of the next eight points for a five-point lead at 25-20. DU cut the lead to two points before senior Nate Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) beat the buzzer giving Wisconsin Lutheran a 28-24 halftime lead.

The Warriors shot 41.9 percent (13-for-31) in the opening half and were led by eight first-half points from Stelse. The Warriors grabbed nine offensive rebounds in the first half, five of those by Lubbe. The nine offensive rebounds plus 10 forced turnovers gave the Warriors 11 more shot attempts in the first 20 minutes. The Stars connected on 50 percent (10-for-20) of their first-half shots and were led by Logan Harris' eight points.

Dominican came out strong after halftime, opening the half on a 6-0 run to quickly take a 30-28 advantage just 1:50 into the second half. DU held a 33-30 lead with 16:16 remaining, but the Warriors held the Stars without a field goal for six and a half minutes as they built a 37-34 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Warriors' lead was still at three, 47-44, with 5:21 remaining before they surged ahead with a 6-0 run behind four Bauer free throws for a nine-point advantage with just under three minutes to play. WLC held a 57-46 lead with two minutes left, but DU quickly cut that lead to six at 57-51 following a Kyle Sherwin three-pointer with 1:06 on the clock.

Dominican netted a few more field goals but WLC knocked down nine of 10 free throws down the stretch to pull away for the 66-59 victory.

Bauer finished with a team-best 19 points for the Warriors, including seven points from the charity stripe where WLC shot 75 percent (21-for-28) as a team. Stelse poured in a career-best 14 points off the bench, while Demuth and senior Julion Griffin (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 13 and 11, respectively. Griffin also added 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Dominican (3-6, 2-3 NAC) was led by Logan Harris who posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Anthony Keener added 13 points.

Dominican outshot the Warriors as it finished the contest knocking down 46 percent (23-for-50) of its shots compared to 37.9 percent (22-for-58) for WLC. Turnovers proved to be a huge difference in the game as the Warriors forced 18 DU turnovers compared to just seven themselves.

Wisconsin Lutheran (3-7, 2-3 NAC) returns to action Monday when it visits Silver Lake (4-8) in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off between the Warriors and Lakers is set for 6 p.m. at the UW-Manitowoc Fieldhouse. Fans can follow the action via live audio at wlcsports.com.
