FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team opened its 2012 season on Monday afternoon by
falling twice to the Gettysburg Bullets 15-8 and 2-1 at the Gene
Cusic Collegiate Classic at Terry Park.
Gettysburg (4-1) finished with 11 runs over the final three
innings to take game one of a doubleheader against Wisconsin
Lutheran, 15-8.
The Bullets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on just one hit in
the first inning, benefited by a two-run double by Cory Karagjozi.
The Warriors got on the board in the second after freshman Brett
Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) scored on a passed ball.
Junior Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) cut the lead in half,
crossing the plate following a ground out by freshman Ian Zahn
(Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran).
The Warriors took advantage of a Gettysburg error in the third
when sophomore Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East) crossed home
plate. Zahn drew a walk to bring Youngbeck across the plate to tie
the game at 4-4.
Following a scoreless fourth frame, Gettysburg jumped on
sophomore starter Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) for four
runs in the top of the fifth, led by a two-run triple by Pat Cody.
Nate Simon singled in another run for Gettysburg in the sixth,
before the visiting Bullets exploded for six more runs in the
seventh and final inning.
Schoen and junior Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) each had two-RBI hits in the Warriors' four-run bottom of
the seventh as they refused to go down without a fight. Youngbeck
led the Warriors with three runs scored, with Braaten and Schoen
each added two. Schoen, Martin and Zahn each had two RBIs for
WLC.
The second game was a pitcher's duel compared to the offensive
power displayed in the first game as Gettysburg defeated WLC
2-1.
Following three and a half scoreless innings, Gettysburg got on
the scoreboard first after a Drew Roy RBI groundout. The Bullets
added another run in the bottom of the sixth following a Clint
O'Brien RBI single. The Warriors got on the board in the top of the
seventh after Martin doubled in Youngbeck from first, but the
Warriors' rally would fall short as Martin remained at second when
the game came to an end.
Freshman Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) took the loss
for the Warriors in his collegiate debut, going six innings and
allowing two runs while scattering seven hits.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2) returns to action on Tuesday with a
doubleheader against Thiel (Pa.) (3-2). First pitch of game one is
scheduled for 9 a.m. ET at the Boston Red Sox 5-Plex in Fort Myers,
Fla.
