FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team continued play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate
Classic on Tuesday by splitting a doubleheader with Thiel (Pa.).
WLC won game one 8-6 before falling 8-1 in the second game.
Following a scoreless first inning, Thiel put up three runs on
the scoreboard, fueled by a two-run double from Cody Trinch. The
Warriors answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of
their own. Freshman Jacob Redman (Swansboro, N.C./Swansboro) drove
in freshman Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) with an
RBI single. Freshman Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) also crossed the plate for the Warriors in the
inning.
Thiel responded back with two more runs in the third on a
two-run double by Bill Roosa. The Warriors added another run in
their half of the third when sophomore Garrick day (Elk Mound,
Wis./Elk Mound) scored on an RBI groundout from senior Tyler Schoen
(Marion, Wis./Marion).
Following a scoreless top half of the fourth inning by junior
pitcher Josh Smith (Appleton, Wis./East), the Warriors tied the
game at 5-5 in the bottom half. Redman doubled in Zahn and later
scored a run of his own, driven in by freshman Connor Vredeveld's
(Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) RBI single.
After Eric King drove in a run for Thiel in the top of the sixth
for the 6-5 lead, the Warriors brought in senior pitcher Steve
Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory) to get the final out
of the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Youngbeck scored
the tying run off a Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) single.
Mattheis' run later came around to score when Day drew a walk, and
Redman came across when senior Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Gustafson pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the win for the
Warriors. Mike Pica took the loss for Thiel, allowing three runs in
2.2 innings of work. Redman led the Warriors offensively, by going
3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Roosa led Thiel (4-3) by
going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.
In the final game of the day, sophomore Cody Nevils (Boca Raton,
Fla./West Boca Raton) took advantage of an error by the Thiel
catcher in the top of the first inning to give the Warriors an
early 1-0 lead. Eric Steininger tied the game up in the bottom of
the inning after crossing home on a balk. .
The Thiel bats came out swinging in the bottom of the second as
the hosts drove in five runs. Thiel added two more in the fourth to
bring its lead to 8-1.
Kyle Mohr scattered three hits over four innings, allowing one
run to earn the win for Thiel. Mattheis took the loss for the
Warriors, giving up five earned runs on nine hits in three innings.
Martin had two hits for the Warriors, with Day, Nevils and Schoen
each adding one. Steininger led Thiel with three hits, two RBIs and
three runs scored.
The Warriors (1-3) have off Wednesday but return to the diamond
on Thursday when they play a doubleheader against Salve Regina
(R.I.) (2-3) First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET at Terry Park
in Fort Myers, Fla.
