CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Jinny Curtis (Muskego,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) roped a two-out three-RBI double in the
bottom of the fifth inning to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team to a 5-3 win over Stevens Institute (N.J.) in its
second game on Friday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate
Classic. WLC fell to Brockport (N.Y.) 1-0 in eight innings in game
one.
In the game two win over Stevens Institute, it was Wisconsin
Lutheran which got on the board first as it pushed one run across
in the bottom of the second. Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) led off the inning with a single and later scored
when Jocelyn Bykowski (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) singled Mantz in
putting the Warriors up 1-0.
The Ducks (4-6) answered as they scored two runs in the fourth
inning on three base hits. Stephanie Senkavich and Noelle Mulligan
picked up RBIs in the frame for Stevens Institute. The Ducks then
plated one more in the top of the fifth when Kendal Aurand singled
in Jennifer Wojtys to make the score 3-1 in favor of Stevens
Institute.
Wisconsin Lutheran responded, however, as it used a two-out rally
to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After the first two Warriors were retired, Kendra Thomas (Jenison,
Mich./Jenison) and Mindy Schalinske (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland
Lutheran) singled and Emily Sievert (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) was
hit by a pitch setting up a two-out based loaded situation for
Curtis.
Curtis rose to the occasion for Wisconsin Lutheran as she smacked a
three-run double to put WLC on top 4-3. Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago,
Ill./Whitney Young) then singled in Curtis giving the Warriors a
5-3 advantage.
Thomas, the Warriors starting pitcher, then retired the side in
order in the sixth keeping the score 5-3. In the seventh, WLC got
the first Ducks batter out but Wojtys singled giving Stevens
Institute a base runner with one out. The next batter, Danielle
DeFeo, also singled but Schalinske gunned down Wojtys trying to
advance to third putting Wisconsin Lutheran one out away from the
win. Thomas got the final batter to ground out to Curtis giving the
Warriors the 5-3 win.
Thomas went the distance for WLC as she allowed just one earned run
and scattered eight hits, striking out two. Brianna Sandone took
the loss for the Ducks, throwing all six innings and allowing five
runs.
Schalinske was the lone Warrior to record multiple hits as she went
2-for-3 also scoring a run. Curtis finished with three RBIs to lead
Wisconsin Lutheran. Aurand had three hits for the Ducks, while
Wojtys finished with two.
In the first game, Thomas and Brockport's Jean Farrell were locked
in a pitchers dual as the score was tied 0-0 after seven innings of
play setting up extra innings. After seven innings, the teams
started with a runner on second base setting up an exciting finish
in game one.
The Warriors bunted their runner over in extras and then tried a
squeeze play, but the Golden Eagles (10-1) recorded the out at home
and escaped the inning keeping the game tied heading into the
bottom of the frame.
Brockport (N.Y.) also tried bunting a runner over but Kelsi Daffner
(Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) caught the bunt attempt
leaving the Golden Eagles runner at second base with one out. A
passed ball advanced the runner to third and pinch-hitter Jenna
Yates hit a sacrifice fly scoring the game-winning run making the
final 1-0 in eight innings.
Thomas was credited with the loss despite allowing no earned runs
in eight innings of work. The sophomore right-hander allowed just
two hits and struck out two. Ferrell was dominant all game as the
senior struck out seven and recorded a no-hitter in picking up the
win.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-3) will conclude its Florida trip with a pair
of games tomorrow morning at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort
Myers, Fla. The Warriors will face Wooster (Ohio) at 9 a.m. and
then take on Amherst (Mass.) at 11 a.m.
