MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team was swept in its home-opening doubleheader on Sunday
by the Carroll Pioneers 8-2 and 17-5 in non-conference action at
Neumann Family Field.
In the first game, Carroll scored two runs without recording a
hit for 2-0 lead after the first inning. In the fifth inning, the
Warriors got on the board when sophomore Garrick Day (Elk Mound,
Wis./Elk Mound) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring
freshman Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) across the
plate.
Carroll answered back with a run in the sixth and a five spot in
the seventh as the Pioneers' bats came alive to bring their lead to
8-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Day drove in his second run of
the afternoon, singling home sophomore Sam Braaten (Appleton,
Wis./East). The score stood for an 8-2 final.
Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) took the loss for the
Warriors, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on
just five hits. He fanned a season-high 10 batters. Day went
1-for-3 with two RBI. Mattheis and freshmen Brett Youngbeck (Brown
Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) and Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) also had hits for the Warriors.
Andy Kersten picked up the win for Carroll (8-5), giving up two
earned runs on two hits and striking out seven over 6.2 innings.
Jordan Stephans went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead
the Pioneers, while Drew Volkmann added three runs.
In the second game, Carroll got on the scoreboard early and
often, putting up 12 runs in the first six innings. In the bottom
of the sixth, Day scored on a wild pitch to get the Warriors on the
scoreboard.
Freshman Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) added
another run in the seventh for the Warriors, scoring on freshman
Korben Biersack's (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) RBI single. WLC
scored two more times in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Zack
Skog (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) scored on a passed ball and
freshman Matt Gowin (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) came around to score on
junior Tyler Schoen's (Marion, Wis./Marion) RBI groundout. The
Warriors added one more run in the bottom of the ninth when Skog
singled home Biersack, but it wasn't enough as the Warriors fell
17-5.
Mattheis took the loss for WLC, giving up four earned runs in
three innings of work on the bump. Youngbeck and Biersack each had
two hits for the Warriors, with Biersack adding a run and RBI.
Chris James earned the win for Carroll, going seven innings and
allowing just one earned run on five hits. Matt Busse went 3-for-4
with three RBI and a run to lead Carroll offensively. Zach Weihert
went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-11) remains home next Saturday when it
hosts Marian (5-5) to open the conference portion of its schedule.
First pitch of the twinbill between the Warriors and Sabres is set
for 12 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
