MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team opened its conference schedule on Saturday by
splitting a doubleheader against Marian, winning game one 5-4
before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
The Warriors started game one strong, scoring two runs in the
bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) doubled in sophomore Cody Nevils
(Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) and junior Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion) to get WLC on the scoreboard first.
The Sabres finally got to sophomore starting pitcher Alex Raver
(Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) in the top of the fourth, scoring two
runs to tie the game at 2-2. It didn't take long for the Warriors
to answer however, as freshman Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) drove in Mattheis with a sacrifice fly to
bring the Warriors back in front.
After Marian tied the game again in the top of the sixth, the
Warriors once again responded by adding two more runs in the bottom
half of the inning. Junior Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) came in to score on an error by the third
baseman, and Schoen came around on an error by the pitcher to give
the Warriors a 5-3 advantage.
Marian added one more run in the eighth, but Raver and the
Warriors defense shut down a late Marian rally in the ninth to
preserve the win.
Raver earned the win for WLC, pitching all nine innings,
allowing two earned runs while striking out six. Mattheis went
1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored, while Martin went 1-for-3
with two runs scored.
Sam Forkert took the loss for Marian, allowing two earned runs
in eight innings of work with seven strikeouts. Anthony Porcaro
went 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Sabres. Will Martin scored three
runs on 3-for-5 at the plate.
The Warriors scored first again in game two, with Schoen driving
in Nevils on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the third to give
the Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Following Marian's single tallies in the fifth and seventh
innings for a 2-1 deficit, freshman Jacob Redman (Swansboro,
N.C./Swansboro) doubled home freshman Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) to tie the game at 2-2 after seven innings
of play. Marian scored in the top of the ninth and the Warriors
were unable to rally, falling just short 3-2.
Zahn took the loss for the Warriors on the mound, despite
allowing just two earned runs over nine innings. Nevils went
2-for-4 with a run scored, and Redman went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Mitch Gardner picked up the win for Marian (8-6, 1-1 NAC),
giving up two earned runs and striking out five over eight innings.
Porcaro went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Matt Bromley went 2-for-4 with
two runs scored.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-12, 1-1 NAC) returns to action on Sunday
at Kapco Park in Mequon, Wis. for a doubleheader against conference
rival Concordia Wisconsin (3-8, 1-1 NAC). First pitch is scheduled
for 1 p.m.
