SHEBOYGAN, Wis. -
The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team dropped a pair of
games to Northern Athletics Conference opponent Lakeland on
Saturday afternoon at Muskie Field. Lakeland took game one in
come-from-behind fashion 5-4 before winning the second contest
9-2.
Game one saw both teams go scoreless through four innings before
WLC plated a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0
lead. Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) started the
inning with a solo homerun and Brandon Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) singled and scored later in the
inning to put WLC up two runs.
Lakeland tallied a run in the bottom of the sixth when Nate Soley
scored to cut the lead to one, but Wisconsin Lutheran responded
with two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead.
Youngbeck again started the inning off strong as he tripled and
then scored on a Mantz RBI groundout making the score 3-1. Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) scored the second run in the
frame on a Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) sac
fly putting WLC up three.
Lakeland would not go away, however, as the host Muskies plated two
in the eighth inning when Soley ripped a two-out RBI double making
the score 4-3 heading into the ninth inning. WLC couldn't add any
insurance and Lakeland scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, the
second being unearned, as it walked off with the game one 5-4
victory.
Matt Weller picked up the win for LC as he pitched two scoreless
innings in relief of starter Derek Loomans. Loomans struck out
eight during his seven innings of work. Alex Raver (Bartlett,
Ill./Bartlett) took the loss for WLC despite pitching eight and a
third quality innings, allowing just three earned runs and striking
out seven.
Youngbeck was the top offensive player for Wisconsin Lutheran going
2-for-4 with a homerun and a triple. He also scored twice and drove
in one. Soley led the Muskies going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs
scored and two RBI.
Game two of the twinbill saw both teams plate a run in the first as
Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to an early lead when Mantz scored on
an RBI groundout from Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran). LC responded in the bottom of the frame as Mike Ruzek
belted a solo homerun to even the score at 1-1.
After scoreless second and third innings, Lakeland broke game two
wide open as it plated six runs, four unearned, to take a
commanding 7-1 lead after four. Andrew Tague had the big hit of the
inning as he hit a two-run homerun early in the frame.
Lakeland (15-10, 5-5 NAC) would add a run each in the fifth and
eighth while the Warriors plated their other run in the seventh as
the final score read 9-2 in favor of the home team. WLC scored its
run on an RBI groundout from Matt Gowin (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) that
plated Vredeveld.
Garrett Morris picked up the game two win on the mound for LC as he
went seven innings giving up one earned run while striking out
four. Josh Smith (Appleton, Wis./East) was charged with the loss as
the junior pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing three
earned runs.
Vredeveld went 3-for-3 to pace the Warriors offense, while Mantz
chipped in with a 2-for-4 performance at the dish. Ruzek led the
Muskies finishing 3-for-4 with four RBI including his first inning
homerun. Tague added two hits and also drove in a pair for
Lakeland.
