MILWAUKEE -
A 13-run eighth inning helped lead the Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team to a 16-6 eight-inning victory over Edgewood
in game one of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader on
Sunday at Neumann Family Field. Game two of the twinbill was
suspended due to darkness as the game was called after the third
inning with Edgewood leading 4-0.
In the opening game, it was the visiting Eagles who went up early
as they plated one run each in the second and third innings to take
a 2-0 lead after three complete. Ben Jennings had an RBI single in
the second to give EC a 1-0 lead, while Ryan Walker scored in the
third on an RBI groundout after leading off the inning with a
double.
The Warriors answered in the bottom of the fifth with two runs to
tie things up at 2-2 as Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) got
Wisconsin Lutheran on the board by singling in Tyler Schoen
(Marion, Wis./Marion). Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) then executed the safety squeeze play to perfection later
in the inning scoring Mattheis and tying the score at 2-2.
Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning as Edgewood went back
on top when Walker again led off the inning with a double and later
scored to give EC a 3-2 lead. WLC responded in the bottom half of
the seventh when Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton)
singled in George Koceja (Largo, Fla./Largo), who started the frame
with a single, to even the score at three apiece.
After a leadoff single by Edgewood in the top of the eighth, the
game was delayed due to inclement weather for a little over an
hour. When play resumed, Edgewood plated three runs in the top of
the eighth to take a 6-3 advantage into the bottom of the
inning.
The rain delay seemed to aid the Warriors bats and hurt Edgewood in
the field as WLC exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the eighth
taking game one 16-6. WLC belted nine hits in the inning and was
also aided by six Eagles errors.
Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) started off the rally
by crushing a solo homerun over the centerfield fence to make the
score 6-4. After tying the game at 6-6 and loading the bases,
Nevils came up big again for the Warriors singling in a pair of
runs with another scoring on a throwing error to give WLC a 9-6
lead. Youngbeck also added a double in the frame and Garrick Day
(Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) added a two-RBI single to help the
Warriors plate 13 runs and end the game via the 10-run rule.
Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory) picked up the
win for WLC as he pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief of
starter Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake). Gustafson gave
up one hit and struck out one after Paumen went seven and a third
innings, striking out three. Casey Geissberger took the loss for
Edgewood as he started the eighth inning and allowed three earned
runs.
Nevils led Wisconsin Lutheran at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with
three RBI. Youngbeck added the homerun and a double to go 2-for-4
as he, Matthies, Koceja and Vredeveld each finished with two hits
for WLC. Edgewood was led by Walker who finished 2-for-5 with two
runs scored.
In game two, Edgewood (8-15, 5-6 NAC) scored a run in the first and
three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) was on the mound for WLC, while Taylor
Hillman was his counterpart for Edgewood.
The two teams will resume game two in the fourth inning on Tuesday
afternoon at Neumann Family Field at 4 p.m. Following that game,
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-20, 5-6 NAC) will next play a doubleheader
against Concordia Chicago (21-7, 8-4 NAC) on Saturday at Cougar
Field in River Forest, Ill.
