MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team resumed game two of its suspended doubleheader
against Edgewood on Tuesday at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors
fell just short 5-4 to split the Northern Athletics Conference
doubleheader which originally began on Sunday.
On Sunday afternoon, Edgewood scored four runs in the first
three innings, but the game was postponed due to darkness with the
Eagles leading 4-0 after three complete. On Tuesday, it was the
Warriors turn to start the game off strong, scoring three times in
the bottom of the fourth.
Freshman Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) got the
Warriors on the board after he stole home during a junior Tyler
Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) rundown at second base. Freshman Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) drove in Schoen and then came
around to score on freshman Connor Vredeveld's (Waterloo,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) RBI groundout to cut the EC lead to
4-3.
Edgewood got one run back in the top of the sixth off of
freshman starting pitcher Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran), who toed the rubber from Sunday. Sophomore Cody Nevils
(Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) took advantage of an error by
the second baseman in the seventh inning to score after Youngbeck
reached base safely. The Warriors, who left 10 runners on base,
were unable to score again despite putting the game-tying run on
third base with no outs in the last of the ninth inning.
Zahn took the loss for WLC, pitching all nine innings while
giving up three earned runs on seven hits. Youngbeck and Mattheis
each had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Warriors.
Taylor Hillmann picked up the win for Edgewood (9-15, 6-6 NAC),
allowing three earned runs on 10 hits over nine innings while
fanning five. Ryan O'Dell went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Brad Clark
scored twice on 2-for-4 hitting to lead the visiting Eagles.
The Warriors (7-21, 5-7 NAC) travel to River Forest, Ill. to
take on NAC opponent Concordia Chicago (21-8, 8-4 NAC) on Saturday.
First pitch of the doubleheader from Cougar Field is scheduled for
12 p.m.
