MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin
Lutheran College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader
on Tuesday afternoon against Cardinal Stritch. The Warriors won the
opener 8-5, before falling in game two, 11-7. Both games were seven
innings.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring twice
in the second inning. They would add one more in the third and
their final two runs came in the fourth for a 5-0 lead heading into
the bottom of the fourth.
The Warriors bats would wake up, however, as WLC added four runs of
their own in the fourth. After a Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer,
Wis./Brown Deer) single started the inning, Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion) drove him in with an RBI triple to center field. A
Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) double would
score Schoen as the Warriors trailed 5-2. Brandon Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) reached on a walk and Korben Biersack
(Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) doubled down the right field line to
drive in Martin. The final run came from a Connor Vredeveld
(Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) sacrifice fly, scoring Mantz and
trimming the lead to just one run, 5-4.
Following a scoreless top of the fifth, the Warriors added four
more runs in the bottom half. Schoen and Martin each recorded a RBI
single giving WLC the lead at 6-5. Vredeveld drove in the final two
runs of the inning on a two-RBI single to left field to put
Wisconsin Lutheran up three, 8-5.
Scott Rivers (Waukesha, Wis./North) picked up his first collegiate
win after throwing two and one-third scoreless innings in relief
and allowing two hits. Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) closed the door in the seventh to record his second
save of the year.
Vredeveld collected one hit and led the team with three RBI. Both
Schoen and Martin added two hits and two RBI apiece to help
pace Wisconsin Lutheran's offense.
In game two, the Warriors jumped out to the early lead, putting
three runs up in the first inning. Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington,
Wis./Burlington) drove in the first run of the game on a fielder's
choice. Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) then
singled, scoring Mantz and the final run of the inning came on a
Taylor Meyer (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) sacrifice fly to right that
plated Hodkiewicz.
The Wolves, trailing 3-0, would add their first run in the second
on an RBI single. WLC would respond with two more runs in the
bottom of the frame on a two-RBI double off the bat of Youngbeck
for a 5-1 lead.
Cardinal Stritch (18-29) would respond with one run in the third
and added three more runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. WLC
scored in the bottom of the fifth and the Wolves answered with one
in the top of the sixth making the score 6-6. CSU broke the game
open in its final at-bat, plating five runs, highlighted by a
Lewandowski three-run homerun to go up 11-6 heading into the
Warriors last at-bat.
George Koceja (Largo, Fla./Largo) drove in a run for WLC in the
bottom of the seventh, but that would be it for the Warriors as
they fell in game two of the twinbill, 11-7.
Nate Friday got the win for the Wolves throwing six and one-third
innings and allowing two earned runs. Ryan DeRosa notched the save
for CSU. Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) pitched six
innings, allowing five earned runs and picked up a no decision in
the game, while Jordan Kalous (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee-Crown) took
the loss pitching the final frame.
Leading the Warriors was Youngbeck who recorded two hits and two
RBI. Jacob Redman (Swansboro, N.C./Swansboro) added an RBI and led
the team with three hits, while Hodkiewicz, Zahn, Meyer and Koceja
had one RBI apiece. Cardinal Stritch was led Lewandowski who had
two hits and drove in three runs.
The Warriors (9-25, 6-10 NAC) will return to the diamond on
Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader versus NAC-leading Rockford
(18-14, 13-3 NAC). First pitch between the Warriors and Regents is
set for 3 p.m. at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.
