MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team split a doubleheader against conference opponent
Benedictine on Sunday in its home finale at Neumann Family Field,
winning game one 5-4, before falling in game two 10-2.
Benedictine struck first in game one, scoring a run on sophomore
starting pitcher Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) to take a 1-0
lead after the first inning. WLC answered back in the bottom of the
second when freshman Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) came home during a rundown with sophomore Garrick Day
(Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) at second base to tie the game at 1-1.
Junior Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) gave
the Warriors the lead in the bottom of the third, singling home
freshman Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) to bring the
score to 2-1.
The Warriors held onto their one-run advantage until the eighth
inning when Benedictine scored to tie the game at 2-2. Youngbeck
responded for the Warriors in the bottom of the inning, leading off
with a triple and then running home on a throwing error. Mantz
singled with the bases loaded to bring home junior Tyler Schoen
(Marion, Wis./Marion) and push the lead to 4-2. Freshman Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) kept the scoring going for WLC,
sending home Martin with an RBI single for the 5-2 lead.
The Eagles rallied in the top of the ninth, scoring twice to cut
the Warriors lead to 5-4. Senior Steve Gustafson (West Bend,
Wis./Luther Preparatory) came in to record the final out and his
third save of the season on Senior Day.
Raver earned the win for WLC, allowing four earned runs in eight
and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts to even his record on
the season to 4-4. Youngbeck went 2-for-4 with two runs scored,
Martin went 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, while Mantz was
3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Kevin Crowley took the loss for BenU, giving up 11 hits and five
runs in seven innings. John Cervantes went 1-for-5 with two RBI and
Uli Ortiz was 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.
WLC was the first to score in game two, taking an early 2-0 lead
after the first inning. Youngbeck singled home Day and then came
around to score on a passed ball.
Following three shutout innings from sophomore starting pitcher
Josh Smith (Appleton, Wis./East), the Eagles jumped on Smith in the
top of the fourth for eight runs. Dan Zust, Ryan Mullin and Tim
Gindville each had two RBI in the inning to lead the BenU attack.
Benedictine added another run in the top of the fifth and seventh
innings to bring its lead to 10-2. The Warriors were unable to
mount any comeback against starting pitcher Nick Diessner and fell
10-2.
Smith took the loss for the Warriors, letting in eight earned
runs in three and two-thirds innings. Gustafson tossed three solid
innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on just two hits while
striking out two. Youngbeck went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a run
scored. Day was also 1-for-4 with one run scored.
Diessner picked up the win for Benedictine (23-14, 15-5 NAC),
allowing an earned run on five hits in eight innings. Zust went
3-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored. Mullin went 1-for-4,
adding three RBI and a run scored.
The Warriors (10-26, 7-11 NAC) continue Northern Athletics
Conference action on Monday with a doubleheader at league-leading
Rockford (20-14, 15-3 NAC) in Loves Park, Ill. First pitch from
Road Ranger Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
