BELOIT, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team dropped both games of its non-conference doubleheader
on Tuesday to Beloit, falling 8-1 and 8-5 at The Ballpark at Strong
Stadium.
In game two, the Warriors jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after
the first inning. Sophomore Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound)
stole home to get the Warriors on the board first. An RBI single
from junior Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) scored junior Doug
Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), and an RBI single
by freshman Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) brought home
Schoen to bring the lead to 3-0. Mattheis later singled home Martin
in the top of the third to bring the Warriors advantage to 4-0.
Beloit first got to sophomore starting pitcher Alex Nikolai
(South Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) in the bottom of the fourth to
trim the lead to 4-1. The Warriors got the run back in the top of
the fifth when Martin took advantage of an error by the third
baseman to score their fifth run of the game.
Beloit responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to
tie the game at 5-5. The hosts added three more in the bottom of
the seventh to take the lead for good, 8-5.
Freshman Scott Rivers (Waukesha, Wis./North) took the loss for
the Warriors, allowing two earned runs in 2.1 innings of relief.
Mattheis led the Warriors offensively, going 4-for-4 with two RBI.
Martin went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Aaron Bushur picked up the win for Beloit, not allowing a run
and giving up just two hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Jarrick
Habecker went 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored to lead
Beloit.
In game one, Beloit scored two runs in the bottom of the second
and four more in the third to give starting pitcher Andrew Edwards
a 6-0 cushion. The Bucs added two more in the sixth and seventh
innings to bring their lead to 8-0. The Warriors got on the
scoreboard in the top of the eighth when Schoen took advantage of a
Beloit error to cross the plate, but the Warriors would fall
8-1.
Freshman Joey Mayefski (Larsen, Wis./Winneconne) took the loss
for WLC, allowing six earned runs in three innings. Senior Steve
Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory) pitched five solid
innings of relief, giving up just one hit and one earned run. Day
and freshman Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran)
each had two hits for the Warriors.
Andrew Edwards earned the win for Beloit (8-10), scattering
three hits over three scoreless innings. Jake Parrott went 1-for-3
with two RBI, while Emory Nelms was 2-for-2 with an RBI and three
runs scored for BC.
The Warriors (3-16, 1-3 NAC) resume Northern Athletics
Conference play on Saturday when they host cross-town foe MSOE
(3-15, 1-3 NAC) in a doubleheader at Neumann Family Field. First
pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
