LOVES PARK, Ill. -
The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team was swept in a
Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader against
conference-leading Rockford on Monday at RiverHawks Stadium.
Rockford took game 11-3 and then won the nightcap, 13-5.
In the opener, WLC got on the board in the top of the first when
Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) drove in Cody Nevils (Boca
Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) on an RBI-groundout to give the
Warriors an early lead. RC came back with a run of its own in the
bottom of the frame making the score 1-1 after one inning of
play.
That score would hold until the bottom of the third when the
Regents plated three runs to take a three-run lead. Rockford then
plated another three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a Ryne
Billesbach bases-clearing double to give the home team a 7-1 lead
after five innings. Rockford then expanded the lead to 9-1 after a
pair of runs in the sixth.
The Warriors scored two runs in the top of the seventh when Connor
Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) drove in a pair with a
two-RBI single scoring Jacob Redman (Swansboro, N.C./Swansboro) and
Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran). Rockford
would add a run each in the seventh and eighth and WLC would not
score past the seventh giving the Regents the 11-3 game one
win.
Redman and Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) each
tallied two hits to lead Wisconsin Lutheran in the opener, while
Vredeveld led the team with two RBI. Jake Nicholson was the top
hitter for Rockford going 3-for-4 and driving in three.
Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) took the loss for WLC as
he threw five and two-thirds innings and struck out one. Joey
Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) threw the final two and a
third innings and gave up just one earned run. Daryn Streed picked
up the victory throwing seven innings and allowing two earned
runs.
Game two saw the Warriors bats come out swinging as they plated
three runs in the top of the first. Schoen and Doug Martin (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) drove in runs during the
three-run frame, while Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound),
Youngbeck and Schoen all scored in the frame.
Unfortunately for Wisconsin Lutheran, Rockford (22-14, 17-3 NAC)
also had a great start as the Regents scored two runs in each of
the first four innings and six of the first seven innings, giving
them a 10-5 lead after seven. Rockford added a run in the eighth to
take game two, 11-5.
Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) led the Warriors with three
hits in game two, while Schoen had a 2-for-5 performance and drove
in a pair of runs. Day, Nevils and Youngbeck also all had two hits
in the nightcap. Jimmy Dercks led the Regents in the second contest
going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two driven in.
Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) took the loss for
WLC as he pitched three innings. The win went to Corey Seipts who
allowed four earned runs with four strikeouts in six innings of
work.
Wisconsin Lutheran (10-28, 7-13 NAC) will conclude its season with
a conference doubleheader at Maranatha (0-29, 0-20 NAC) on Saturday
afternoon. First pitch between the Warriors and Crusaders is set
for 12 p.m. at Washington Park in Watertown, Wis.
