MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team evened its Northern Athletics Conference record to 3-3 on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over cross-town rival MSOE at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors won the opener 11-1 in eight innings, before finishing the sweep with a 6-3 victory in game two.

Game one started out as a pitchers duel with a 0-0 tie through three innings. MSOE had the bases loaded in top of the fourth and looked ready to take the lead, but sophomore starting pitcher Alex Raver (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) kept the visitors scoreless, striking out two and forcing a groundout to escape the jam.

The Warriors were first to break the shutout, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) drove in sophomore Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound), and later came around to score on freshman Brett Youngbeck's (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) RBI double to give WLC the 2-0 lead.

The Warriors tripled their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the seventh, led by junior Doug Martin's (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) two RBI and a run scored. After MSOE scored its lone run of the game in the top of the eighth, the Warriors continued their offensive barrage in the bottom of the inning. WLC added five more runs with Martin and sophomore Cody Nevils (Boca Raton, Fla./West Boca Raton) each adding two RBI. Youngbeck singled home Martin to bring the lead to 11-1 and end the ball game.

Raver earned his second straight win the mound for WLC, going eight innings while giving up just one earned run and striking out 11. Youngbeck went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI, while Martin drove in four and scored twice on 2-for-4 at the plate. Day scored three times and had one RBI on 3-for-5 hitting. Every hitter recorded at least one hit for WLC, which pounded out a season-high 19 hits.

Lucas Yogerst took the loss for MSOE, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits through 6.1 innings. David Miklosi, Adam Vlaj, and Maxwell Poeske each had two hits for the Raiders.

The Warriors bats stayed hot in game two, as Martin drove in Day in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Nevils drove in freshman Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and freshman Korben Biersack (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) came in on Martin's sac fly to push the WLC advantage to 3-0.

The Raiders finally got to junior starter Josh Smith (Appleton, Wis./East) in the top of the fifth for two runs and another in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The Warriors didn't take long to respond however, as Schoen scored the go-ahead run on Mantz's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Following a scoreless top of the eighth by Smith, Martin doubled home two big insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to bring the Warriors lead to 6-3. Senior Steve Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Luther Preparatory) pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the season and seal the win for WLC.

Smith picked up the win for the Warriors, allowing just one earned run in eight innings of work. Martin was 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Mantz went 2-for-3 with a run scored and the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the seventh.

Michael Bergstrom was charged with the loss for MSOE, allowing three earned runs in 4.2 innings of relief. Wes Stasik went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored to lead MSOE (3-17, 1-5 NAC).

The Warriors (5-16, 3-3 NAC) look to jump above .500 in conference play on Monday with a doubleheader against Dominican (11-10, 3-3 NAC) in Schaumberg, Ill. First pitch at Alexian Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
