MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Heather Nielsen
(Wildwood, Fla./Villages) scored the game-winning goal 1:25 into
overtime as the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team
prevailed with a 2-1 win over Martin Luther Saturday at Warrior
Field.
Nielsen took a cross pass from Cari Westover (Muskego,
Wis./Muskego) and pushed it past the keeper giving Wisconsin
Lutheran its first win of the 2012 season.
The opening half was reminiscent of Friday's 0-0 double
overtime tie as the Warriors and Knights couldn't muster much
offense and the two played a scoreless opening 45 minutes.
Each team put up four shots in the opening half and each
goalkeeper, Kate Gucinski (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) of
WLC and Keely Keese of MLC, made three saves in the first 45
minutes of action.
It was the visiting Vikings who struck first as Casey Sauer pushed
one past second-half goalkeeper Sarah Luebke (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox
Valley Lutheran) for a 1-0 MLC lead with just under 35 minutes
remaining in regulation. Emily Marggraf recorded an assist on
Sauer's score.
That lead would not last long as just over seven minutes later, the
Warriors netted their first goal of the season. Sophomore Sarah
Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) sent a corner kick
towards the goal and a Knights defender knocked the ball into the
net to tie the score at 1-1.
The 1-1 score would remain for the rest of regulation as each
keeper stayed strong for the remainder of the second half. WLC
out-shot the Knights 13-4 in the second half as Keese made five
saves for the Knights, while Luebke made two second-half saves.
The extra session would not last long as with just over a minute
into action, Westover placed the perfect pass to Nielsen and she
took care of the rest to give WLC the 2-1 win. Gucinski earned the
win in the net after returning to play the overtime session.
Westover led Wisconsin Lutheran with five shots as the
hosts out-shot the Knights 19-7 for the game. Bethany Schultz had
three shots to lead Martin Luther (0-1-0).
WLC (1-0-1), which is off to its best start since the 2004 season
when it began 2-0-1, returns to action Monday when it hosts Lake
Forest (0-1-0) in a non-conference matchup. Game time between the
Warriors and Foresters is set for 7 p.m. at Warrior Field.
