MILWAUKEE -
The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's soccer team dropped its
non-conference contest with Buena Vista 2-1 Saturday afternoon at
Warrior Field.
A goal by Tori Carson with 17:28 remaining in the second half
proved to be the game winner for the visitors as her score broke a
1-1 tie. Carson scored off a rebound from her own shot as WLC
goalkeeper Kate Gucinski (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran)
stopped her first attempt, but Carson was there to put the rebound
back in for the eventual game-winner.
The Beavers also had the first goal of the contest when Sarah
Kensinger scored at the 23:53 mark off an assist from Shelby
Ripperger. Ripperger sent one sailing off a free kick and Kensinger
was there for the score to put the Beavers ahead 1-0.
That lead would only last 16 seconds as junior Maggie Smith
(Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) tied the game at 1-1 when she scored off a
cross from Megume Poetter (Federal Way, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran).
The 1-1 score would remain until halftime.
Buena Vista (6-0-1) held an edge in first-half shots as the Beavers
recorded eight compared to four for Wisconsin Lutheran. Gucinski
had three first-half saves as she helped keep the score tied
heading into halftime.
The second half was scoreless until the Carson game-winner with
17:28 left on the clock. Buena Vista out-shot the Warriors in the
second 45 minutes, 7-0. Smith led Wisconsin Lutheran with three
shots, while Carson led all players with four for BVU.
Gucinski finished with six saves in net while her counterpart,
Jaclyn Pfeifer, stopped one shot to gain the victory for BVU.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-5-1) returns to action tomorrow afternoon
when it plays its first road game of the season at Eureka (3-3).
Game time between the Warriors and Red Devils is set for 1 p.m. at
Traister Field.
