RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's basketball team dropped its 2012-2013 season finale
Tuesday as it fell to Concordia Chicago, 84-68, at Geiseman
Gymnasium in River Forest, Ill. The loss, combined with
Benedictine's win over Rockford, eliminates the Warriors from
Northern Athletics Conference Tournament contention.
In the game's opening half, it was host CUC which took control
as it held the lead for the entire opening 20 minutes, with the
exception of two early ties. Concordia Chicago built its lead to a
first-half best 16 points, 38-22, with 1:13 left but the Warriors
scored the final four points of the first half, making the score
38-26 at halftime.
WLC struggled to get things going before halftime as it shot
just 36.7 percent (11-for-30), including only 8.3 percent
(1-for-12) from beyond the arc. CUC countered with 51.6 percent
(16-for-31) shooting, including 57.1 percent (4-for-7) from
three-point range in the first 20 minutes.
The Warriors came out strong after halftime, opening the second
half on a 13-6 run over the first six minutes and cut Concordia
Chicago's lead to 44-39. Unfortunately for Wisconsin Lutheran, CUC
answered with a 7-0 run to build its lead back to 12 at 51-39.
Wisconsin Lutheran again made a charge as it tried to keep its
NAC Tournament hopes alive, cutting the deficit to five, 64-59,
with 5:39 remaining thanks to a three-point play by senior Tim
Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran). That was as close as it
would get as CUC finished the game on a 20-9 run, gaining the 84-68
victory. Benedictine's 75-64 win over Rockford went final just
minutes later, eliminating the Warriors from conference tournament
contention.
Demuth concluded his career with a team-high 19 points and was
one of four Warriors to finish in double-figures. Sophomore Brett
Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) added 14 points and a
team-best seven rebounds, while senior Nate Bauer (Lake Mills,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and sophomore Kyle Stelse (Jefferson,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) added 13 each. The Warriors finished the
game shooting 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the floor, but just 13
percent (3-for-23) from three-point range.
Concordia Chicago (4-21, 4-12 NAC) was led by Khirey Floyd's
game-best 29 points. Marcus Elston posted a double-double with 11
points and 11 rebounds as the Cougars shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57)
from the field.
Wisconsin Lutheran concludes its season with a 9-16 overall
record, including a 6-10 mark in the Northern Athletics
Conference.
