FT, MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team opened its 2013 season Monday, splitting a
doubleheader with Defiance (Ohio). The Warriors picked up their
first win of the season in game two, winning 4-2 after dropping
game one, 5-0.
In game two, the Warriors found themselves trailing 2-0 after
allowing a run in the first and third innings. In the top of the
fifth, WLC's bats came alive as it took the lead by scoring four
times. Sophomore Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home senior Doug
Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran). Sophomore Matt
Gowin (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) then singled home sophomore Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) to tie the game at 2-2. Later in
the inning, sophomore Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer)
brought home sophomore Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) and Gowin to double up Defiance for a 4-2
lead.
Freshman Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) held
that lead the rest of the way, picking up a victory in his college
debut. Ruppel went all 7.0 innings, allowing just five hits and one
earned run. Youngbeck went 1-for-3 with two RBI, while Gowin went
1-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored.
Jake Taylor took the loss for Defiance (3-1), allowing four
earned runs in 6.0 innings. Aaron Helland went 1-for-4 with two
runs scored.
Earlier in the day in game one, the Warriors were defeated
5-0.
Following four scoreless innings, Defiance was able to break the
game open with a five-run fifth inning. Darin Waterman highlighted
the inning with a grand slam.
Waterman also beat the Warriors on the mound, scattering three
hits while striking out 14 batters over 7.0 innings to earn the win
for Defiance.
Sophomore Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) took the
loss for WLC, giving up five earned runs in 6.0 innings, adding
four strikeouts. Sophomore Jacob Gustafson (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) pitched one inning of scoreless relief for the
Warriors. Junior Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound),
Youngbeck, and Mattheis each tallied one hit for WLC.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-1) plays another doubleheader tomorrow
against Principia (Ill.) at the Player Development Center in Ft.
Myers, Fla. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 10 a.m.
