FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team suffered its first sweep of the season Friday
in a doubleheader against Gettysburg (Pa.) at the former Boston Red
Sox Player Development Center, falling by scores of 14-1 and
7-1.
In game one, Gettsyburg began the scoring early and often. The
Bullets' bats came alive to score 13 runs through the first four
innings. Patrick O'Grady led the charge, driving in four runs
during that stretch.
WLC got its lone run in the seventh on a Brandon Mantz (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) single that brought home Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia). The Warriors couldn't muster
any more offense as they fell 14-1.
Alex Nikolai (South Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) took the loss,
giving up five earned runs in 3.1 innings. Jacob Gustafson (West
Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had 3.2 solid innings of
relief, allowing one earned runs and striking out two. Mantz
finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI. Aaron Roeseler (Watertown,
Wis./Luther Preparatory) added two hits in four at-bats.
Ryan Taylor shut down the Warriors for Gettysburg (7-3), not
allowing an earned run over 7.0 innings and striking out eight.
O'Grady finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Game two remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when
Gettysburg erupted for five runs and a 5-0 lead. The Bullets later
added two more scores in the bottom of the fourth.
Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) got the
Warriors on the board in the top of the sixth, coming home on Brett
Youngbeck's (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) RBI groundout.
Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) suffered the
loss for WLC, allowing three earned runs in 4.0 innings, striking
out three. Andrew Iverson (Janesville, Wis./Craig) pitched 2.0
scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit. Mitch Skarban
(Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led WLC with two hits in three
trips to the plate.
Drew Felsenthal picked up the win, allowing just one earned run
and four hits in 7.0 innings while adding eight strikeouts. O'Grady
went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
The Warriors (5-3) conclude their Florida trip at the Gene Cusic
Collegiate Classic with a single nine-inning game Friday against
Drew (N.J.) (4-3) at the Player Development Center. First pitch is
scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
