FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College baseball team wrapped up play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate
Classic Saturday with an 11-2 victory over Drew (N.J.) at the
former Boston Red Sox Player Development Complex.
Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) got things started for WLC in
the first, plating Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) and Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) with a
single for an early 2-0 lead.
In the second, Drew cut its deficit in half with a run. In the
bottom of the frame, Roeseler singled home Zack Skog (Hampshire,
Ill./Hampshire) to get that run back. Brandon Mantz (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) then singled home Day to push the
Warriors lead to 4-1.
WLC kept the offense going in the third, after Drew added
another run in the top half of the inning. Sam Mattheis (Rosendale,
Wis./Laconia) reached home on an error by the catcher and Roeseler
drove in two more runners for a 7-2 advantage.
WLC was kept off the scoreboard until the eighth when it tacked
on four more insurance runs. Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) capped off the scoring with a two-run single that
brought home Mattheis and Schoen.
Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) pitched 8.0 innings to
get the win, allowing one earned run on six hits. Scott Rivers
(Waukesha, Wis./North) came in to pitch a scoreless ninth and shut
the door on the Rangers. Roeseler led the way offensively, going
4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Bobby Miskura took the loss for Drew (5-4), giving up seven
runs, three earned, on nine hits in 2.2 innings. Al Krause finished
2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Warriors (6-3) are scheduled to make their 2013 home debut
Friday, March 22 with a non-conference doubleheader against
Northland (3-5). First pitch from Neumann Family Field is slated
for 1 p.m.
