FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College softball team finished its spring break trip to Florida
strong as it tallied two victories Saturday. The Warriors defeated
Nichols (Mass.) 7-2 and Brockport (N.Y.) 4-1 to conclude its
season-opening trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
The Warriors took an early lead over Nichols in their first game
as a Tara Degl'Innocente (Lisle, Ill./Naperville North) double to
left center brought in Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) from third base. Lauren Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) scored in the second inning on an error to
increase the lead to 2-0.
The Warriors cushioned their lead with three runs in the fifth
inning. Two Bison errors allowed Tayler Thern (Hortonville,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and Mindy Schalinske (Burlington,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) to score, increasing the lead to 4-0.
Curtis then singled to bring in Dayan Gacgacao (Chicago,
Ill./Whitney Young) and extend the lead to 5-0. Schalinske and
Curtis would score again in the seventh inning to make the lead
7-0. The Bison attempted a comeback in the last of the seventh, but
fell short to end the game at 7-2.
Bekah Shellberg (Burlington, Wis./Catholic Central) earned her
third win of the week as she pitched 6.0 innings and recorded four
strikeouts. Shellberg held the Bison scoreless on four hits. Libby
Larsen (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) pitched the final inning for the
Warriors, surrendering two runs and striking out one.
Taylor Ferrazi took the loss for Nichols (1-2) as she pitched
7.0 innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits. Janine Coleman
went 1-for-1 as she doubled and recorded the only RBI for the
Bison.
WLC's second game was a pitcher's dual as the first run did not
come across until the fifth inning when Brockport took the lead
1-0. The Warriors answered in the sixth with a bang. After singles
from Gacgacao and Schalinske, Curtis hit another single to score
Gacgacao from second and tie the score at 1-1. Degl'Innocente put
down a sacrifice bunt to bring in Curtis. A double by Jenny
Rechlicz (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) and a bunt by Mantz helped
to extend the lead to the final score of 4-1.
Kendra Thomas (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) pitched all 7.0 innings
and recorded the win for the Warriors. Thomas finished with six
strikeouts and gave up only three hits and one walk.
Erin Fleming took the loss for the Golden Eagles (1-1) as she
pitched 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Fleming
struck out four batters on the day. Jaime Berger finished the game
for Brockport as she tossed the final 1.3 scoreless innings.
Brianna Harris went 2-for-3 and scored the Golden Eagles' only run
of the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran's 6-4 Florida record is its best ever on a
spring break trip. The Warriors return home to play Cardinal
Stritch (10-12) March 29 in a non-conference doubleheader. The home
opener for WLC is scheduled for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
