MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team suffered two come-from-behind defeats at the hands of
the Lakeland Muskies Saturday at Neumann Family Field. The Warriors
dropped both games of the conference doubleheader by scores of 8-7
and 5-1.
Game one was full of scoring and big plays for both teams as the
Warriors started the scoring right away, jumping out to a 3-1 lead
thanks to quality hitting from senior Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion), who ended the game going 2-for-5 with three RBI and a
walk. The game was closely contested all the way through until the
final inning of play. The Warriors held onto a 7-6 lead going into
the 9th inning, until Lakeland was able to get two runners across
the plate to take a 8-7 lead. WLC was not able to score any runs to
answer back even after stranding runners on second and third.
Sophomore Jaime Pauman (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) went 6.0
innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs. Sophomore Scott Rivers
(Waukesha, Wis./North) pitched the remaining 3.0 innings of relief,
only allowing three hits and two runs to close out the game.
David Cherney pitched the final 1.1 innings for the Muskies to
earn his first win of the season on the bump.
The Warriors struggled to score in game two, plating only one
run in the second inning off a freshman Mitch Skarban (Appleton,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) ground out to shortstop, allowing
sophomore Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) to score.
Lakeland's bats got hot in the fourth inning as it pounded out
four runs to take a 4-1 lead. LC added one more run in the fifth
inning to seal the victory.
Sophomore Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
and Schoen both had two hits each for the Warriors.
Junior Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) pitched 4.0
innings for the Warriors, allowing six hits and four runs.
Sophomores Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington), Andrew
Iverson (Janesville, Wis./Craig), and Jacob Gustafson (West Bend,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) all pitched remaining innings in
relief.
Luke Mandich recorded his first win of the season for Lakeland
(6-9, 2-4 NAC). He pitched the entire game, allowing only five
hits, one run, and also fanned five batters.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-8, 3-5 NAC) will travel to Stampfl Field
in Verona, Wis., to take on the Edgewood College Eagles (5-15, 3-3
NAC) Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can follow
