MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team swept a pair of games from Marian Tuesday at Neumann
Family Field to even its conference record at 5-5. The Warriors won
the opener, 10-8, before completing the sweep with a 2-1 win in the
nightcap.
Trailing 3-1, the Warriors bats came alive in the top of the
third inning in game one. Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther
Preparatory) got the scoring started by stealing home on a
successful double steal to pull WLC within one. Brett Youngbeck
(Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) and Sam Mattheis (Rosendale,
Wis./Laconia) took advantage of an error by Marian and both came
home for a 4-3 lead. Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) capped off the inning with an RBI double to bring home
Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) and set the score at 5-3 in
favor of the Warriors.
Marian rallied to score five runs through the fourth and fifth
innings to take an 8-5 lead, but the Warriors offense responded
again in the top of the sixth. Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran), Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound),
and Roeseler each knocked in a run in the inning, and Korben
Biersack (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) scored on an error to retake
the lead at 9-8. Biersack also added an insurance run in the top of
the seventh with an RBI single to put the final at 10-8.
Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) pitched the
final 4.0 innings of the game to earn the win. Ruppel allowed just
one hit and struck out three on his way to 4.0 shutout innings.
Roeseler finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs
scored.
Bryce Taylor took the loss for the Sabres, letting in seven
earned runs on 11 hits. Ryan Siefert drove in four runs on a
2-for-2 performance at the plate.
While game one was an offensive showcase, game two featured a
pitcher's dual. WLC got all the offense it needed in the top of the
third inning. Day singled home Matt Gowin (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) and
Mattheis plated Day for an early 2-0 advantage.
Mattheis kept the shutout until the seventh inning when Marian
brought its first run of the game across the plate. The sophomore
hurler stymied any attempt of a Sabres comeback, however, stranding
two runners on base in both the seventh and eighth innings and one
runner in the ninth.
Mattheis went the complete 9.0 innings, allowing the single
earned run and striking out six to pick up his first win of the
season. Day went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run
scored.
Brandon Winfield was tagged with the loss for the Sabres (11-7,
5-3 NAC), also going 9.0 innings and allowing two runs on four
hits. Three different Marian players recorded two hits each.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-8, 5-5 NAC) will look to move above .500
in Northern Athletics Conference play Wednesday when it resumes a
suspended doubleheader against Edgewood (7-15, 5-3 NAC) at 3 p.m.
at Stamplf Field in Verona, Wis. WLC leads the Eagles 2-0 in the
middle of the first inning of the opener.
