Box Score 2 AURORA, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team suffered a sweep at the hands of the Aurora University Spartans on Sunday at Solfisburg Park. WLC dropped the opener, 18-7, before falling in game two, 11-1.
Wisconsin Lutheran started off strong in game one. Sam Mattheis' (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) single to left field brought in Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) for the first run of the game. Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) then singled to right field to bring in Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) from second for a 2-0 Warriors lead after a half inning of play.
Aurora erupted for eight runs over the next three innings before the Warriors answered back in the fourth. Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 8-3. Day then scored on an Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) groundout later in the inning to cut the lead in half at 8-4.
The Spartans extended the lead to 11-4 over the next two innings. In the sixth, the Warriors got back on track as back-to-back walks with the bases loaded brought in Korben Biersack(Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) and Vredeveld. An error by the pitcher then plated Day from third to bring the score to 11-7, but the Warriors stranded the bases loaded with nobody out as Aurora escaped further damage.
Aurora tacked on seven more runs in the following three innings. The Warriors' bats could not get going and the game ended early in eight innings.
Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) took the loss for the Warriors as he surrendered 11 hits, eight runs, and struck out one over 3.0 innings. Day went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for the Warriors. Vredeveld batted 2-for-4 and scored twice, while Roeseler and Mattheis finished with two RBIs each.
Brad Warnecke picked up the win for Aurora as he allowed 10 hits, six runs, and struck out three over 5.0 innings. Carlos Olavarria went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and three RBIs for the Spartans. Tanner Oymaian and Cory Walden also added four RBIs each going 5-for-5 and 4-for-6, respectively.
The Warriors struggled to get started in game two as Aurora jumped out to an 11-0 lead going into the fifth inning. Wisconsin Lutheran scored its lone run when Roeseler scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. The Warriors could not add anymore runs and the score stood at 11-1 as the game ended in seven innings.
Scott Rivers (Waukesha, Wis./North) took the loss on the mound for the Warriors as he gave up eight runs on six hits and three walks. Mantz, Roeseler, and Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) recorded the three hits in the game for the Warriors.
Jared Steck recorded the victory for Aurora (18-9, 12-4 NAC) with just one run allowed on three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. Four different Spartans recorded two hits and four players scored two runs each. Corey Landers finished the game with three RBIs and a run scored after going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-10, 5-7 NAC) continues conference play on Monday when it hosts Concordia University Chicago (22-3, 12-2 NAC). The doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start at Neumann Family Field.
