Warriors Hold Off Eagles' Comeback For Twinbill Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

VERONA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team held off a furious Edgewood College rally, but was able to hold on for a 12-11 win in game two to split its doubleheader with the Eagles on Wednesday at Stampfl Field. The Eagles edged the Warriors in the opener, 7-6.

In game two of Wednesday's matchup, Edgewood was first to get on the board as it scored once in the first inning. Wisconsin Lutheran then went onto score 11 runs over the next five innings. The Warriors scored twice in the second and once in the third to make the score 3-1 before their bats really came alive.

During the fourth inning, Garrick Day's (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) groundout to shortstop with one out brought in Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) from third. Edgewood then committed a fielding error that allowed Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) to reach base and score Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran). Brett Youngbeck's (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) double down the right field line two at-bats later brought in Roeseler and Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia). Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) later singled to right to score Youngbeck and conclude the five-run inning at 8-1.

The Eagles gained a couple runs back in the bottom of the inning. The Warriors, however, tacked on four more runs in the following innings to extend their lead to 11-3. Errors plagued WLC in the eighth as it surrendered seven runs as the Eagles cut the lead to 12-10. The Eagles scored one more run before being put away by the Warriors to end the game 12-11 with the tying run stranded on third when the final out was made.

Scott Rivers (Waukesha, Wis./North) received the win for the Warriors as he pitched 7.1 innings and surrendered eight runs on 14 hits, including zero walks and three strikeouts. Mattheis picked up his first save for the Warriors. Martin led the Warriors offense as he batted 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Mitch Skarban (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) also finished 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

Nate Averill was dealt the loss for the Eagles during a 12-hit, eight-run, and three-strikeout outing over 3.2 innings. Zack Creekmore and Ryan O'Dell led Edgewood as they ended with two runs and three RBIs, respectively.

In game one of the previously suspended doubleheader, Mattheis started the Warriors off quick with a double that scored both Day and Roeseler to make the score 2-0. Both teams added a run to make the score 3-1 heading into the bottom of the third. Edgewood put together a four-run third to take the lead back at 5-3.

In the fourth, an Edgewood error by the catcher followed by a wild pitch allowed Vredeveld and Day to score to even the game at 5-5. Edgewood added a run in each of the next two innings to take back the lead at 7-5. The Warriors tried to battle back as a fielder's choice brought in Roeseler in the seventh, but the score stayed there at 7-6 as the Warriors also left the eventual tying run on third when the game came to an end.

Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) took the loss for the Warriors as he pitched 4.2 innings and surrendered seven runs on 13 hits, two walks with one strikeout. Roeseler webt 2-for-3 and scored twice. Vredeveld finished the game 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

Trevor Koehn earned the victory for the Eagles (11-19, 9-7 NAC) as he pitched 8.0 innings and gave up four runs, seven hits, and struck out three. Both Andrew Lauritzen and Brad Clark batted 4-for-5 and recorded an RBI for Edgewood. Lauritzen also added a run for the Eagles.

Wisconsin Lutheran (14-11, 8-8 NAC) returns home to play conference opponent Rockford College (12-17, 10-5 NAC) on Saturday. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12 p.m. at Neumann Family Field.
