MEQUON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team was swept in its conference-opening doubleheader by
rival Concordia Wisconsin 5-2 and 14-8 Wednesday at Kapco Park.
In game one, the Warriors jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the
first inning, but couldn't gain any more momentum after that.
Concordia tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth, and then proceeded to
score two in the eighth and another in the ninth to seal the game
away.
Sophomore Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
had a fantastic day at the plate for the Warriors. He recorded
three hits in four at-bats, one of which was a triple in the eighth
inning. WLC finished with six hits for the game.
Sophomore Jaime Pauman (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) took the
loss in the opener giving up six hits and four earned runs in 7.0
innings. Sophomores Andrew Iverson (Janesville, Wis./Craig) and
Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) each pitched an
inning of relief.
CUW's Andrew Mueller pitched a complete game, recording 10
strikeouts and allowing six hits. Three Falcons players recorded
two hits each in the contest.
Game two started off similar to game one for the Warriors as
they jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one inning. Sophomore Brett
Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./ Brown Deer) tripled in his first
at-bat. Senior Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) then walked and
stole second which led Youngbeck to steal home. Sophomore Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) followed with an RBI single that
plated Schoen.
The Falcons plated four runs on four hits in the second inning,
and added another in the third for a 6-2 lead. Following four
scoreless innings, CUW broke open a 6-3 lead by scoring eight times
in the eighth. WLC responded with five runs of its own off of four
hits in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough to overcome
the deficit.
Roeseler and Mattheis registered three hits each in game two as
the Warriors out-hit the Falcons 14-12.
Freshman Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) took
the loss for WLC after tossing 2.1 innings and giving up six hits
and six earned runs.
The Falcons' Austin Baglow earned the win on the mound as he
pitched 7.0 innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs. Concordia
Wisconsin (3-10, 3-1 NAC) received three hits each from Kyle
Hegeman and Joel Sharon.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-5, 0-2 NAC) travels to Henry Aaron Field
Saturday for a doubleheader versus conference opponent MSOE (5-5,
1-3 NAC). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
