Baseball Falls Twice In Conference Opener Against CUW

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team was swept in its conference-opening doubleheader by rival Concordia Wisconsin 5-2 and 14-8 Wednesday at Kapco Park.

In game one, the Warriors jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning, but couldn't gain any more momentum after that. Concordia tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth, and then proceeded to score two in the eighth and another in the ninth to seal the game away.

Sophomore Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) had a fantastic day at the plate for the Warriors. He recorded three hits in four at-bats, one of which was a triple in the eighth inning. WLC finished with six hits for the game.

Sophomore Jaime Pauman (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) took the loss in the opener giving up six hits and four earned runs in 7.0 innings. Sophomores Andrew Iverson (Janesville, Wis./Craig) and Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) each pitched an inning of relief.

CUW's Andrew Mueller pitched a complete game, recording 10 strikeouts and allowing six hits. Three Falcons players recorded two hits each in the contest.

Game two started off similar to game one for the Warriors as they jumped out to a 2-1 lead after one inning. Sophomore Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./ Brown Deer) tripled in his first at-bat. Senior Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) then walked and stole second which led Youngbeck to steal home. Sophomore Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) followed with an RBI single that plated Schoen.

The Falcons plated four runs on four hits in the second inning, and added another in the third for a 6-2 lead. Following four scoreless innings, CUW broke open a 6-3 lead by scoring eight times in the eighth. WLC responded with five runs of its own off of four hits in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.

Roeseler and Mattheis registered three hits each in game two as the Warriors out-hit the Falcons 14-12.

Freshman Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) took the loss for WLC after tossing 2.1 innings and giving up six hits and six earned runs.

The Falcons' Austin Baglow earned the win on the mound as he pitched 7.0 innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs. Concordia Wisconsin (3-10, 3-1 NAC) received three hits each from Kyle Hegeman and Joel Sharon.

Wisconsin Lutheran (6-5, 0-2 NAC) travels to Henry Aaron Field Saturday for a doubleheader versus conference opponent MSOE (5-5, 1-3 NAC). First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
