MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
baseball team scored runs in the final inning in each game of its
doubleheader en route to sweeping the MSOE Raiders Saturday at
Henry Aaron Field. The Warriors won the opener, 7-4, before a 9-8
victory in 11 innings in the nightcap.
The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one
when sophomore Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory)
singled home junior Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound). The
host Raiders answered by scoring all four of their runs in the
bottom of the inning on just two hits as they took advantage of two
Warriors errors in the frame.
Following a scoreless fourth, WLC plated two runs in the fifth
on RBI hits from Day and sophomore Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer,
Wis./Brown Deer). The Warriors knotted the score at 4-4 in the
sixth when sophomore Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) singled home freshman Mitch Skarban (Appleton, Wis./Fox
Valley Lutheran).
The score remained tied at 4-4 until the ninth when Wisconsin
Lutheran scored three times on three hits. Youngbeck and senior
Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) provided RBIs
in the inning for the forest green and white.
Senior Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) and sophomore Sam
Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) each went 3-for-5 to lead the
Warriors at the plate in the game. Sophomore Joey Hodkiewicz
(Burlington, Wis./Burlington) tossed a complete game for the
Warriors, allowing just four runs, two earned, on five hits.
MIke Bergstrom was dealt the loss on the hill for MSOE as he
gave up three runs in 2.0 innings.
Game two saw the Warriors jump out to a commanding 7-2 lead
after three innings, only to have the Raiders come back and tie the
score at 7-7 after eight complete. The Warriors mustered just three
hits between the fourth and eighth innings.
WLC regained the lead at 8-7 in its half of the ninth, but MSOE
countered with a single tally of its own in the last of the ninth
to send the game into extra innings. In the 11th, Martin came up
with a huge two-out RBI double that plated Youngbeck and the
Warriors held on for the sweep to even their early-season
conference record at 2-2.
Martin led the charge by going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run
scored. Five other players recorded RBIs in the game for WLC. Day
earned the win in relief for the Warriors after throwing the final
2.2 innings. Mattheis went the initial 6.2 innings and allowed five
runs on five hits. He was plagued by six walks.
Wes Stasik went 3-for-4 to lead the Raiders (5-7, 1-5 NAC)
offensively. Adam Vlaj was handed the loss as he gave up one run
over the final 3.0 innings.
After 13 straight games away from Neumann Family Field,
Wisconsin Lutheran (8-5, 2-2 NAC) will play its home opener
tomorrow against Dominican (7-14, 2-4 NAC). First pitch of the NAC
doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
