MILWAUKEE - It has become apparent that the
Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team would rather finish games
in extra innings. That would be the case again Sunday as the
Warriors played their third straight extra-inning affair, splitting
a doubleheader with Dominican at Neumann Family Field. WLC won the
opener, 8-7, before dropping game two, 6-4.
WLC got on the scoreboard first in the opener, striking in the
bottom of the second. Senior Doug Martin (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) brought home senior Tyler Schoen (Marion,
Wis./Marion) with a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run of the
day. Junior Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) then doubled to
plate sophomore Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) and put the
score at 2-0. The Warriors tacked on three more runs in the bottom
of the third, at one point stringing together three straight hits
that each scored a base runner.
Dominican struck back in the top of the fifth, scoring four
times to trim its deficit to 5-4. Sophomore Brett Youngbeck (Brown
Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) responded in the bottom of the inning,
doubling home sophomore Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle
Moraine Lutheran) to push the lead back to 6-4.
Dominican kept its scoring going, scoring once in the sixth and
twice in the seventh for a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the eighth,
Martin took advantage of a Dominican error to tie the game at
7-7.
Nine innings wasn't enough to decide the game, with the contest
going to the bottom of the 10th. Martin once again beat Dominican
on the bases, scoring on a passed ball from third for the winning
run.
Sophomore Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) came on in
relief to earn the win, throwing 1.2 hitless and scoreless innings.
Youngbeck finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.
Cody Mueller took the loss for Dominican, pitching 9.1 innings,
allowing eight runs on nine hits. Lucas McKinney and Ryan
DiCristofano both had two RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, the Warriors were first to score again. Youngbeck
got things started by singling home sophomore Aaron Roeseler
(Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory). Dominican answered with a run
in the top of the fourth to tie the contest at one apiece. DU added
one more run in the sixth for a 2-1 lead.
WLC scored twice in the seventh, but once again Dominican
answered, matching those two runs to maintain a 4-3 lead. In the
bottom of the ninth, Mantz reached on a fielder's choice that
scored sophomore Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) to tie the game at 4-4 and the game was eventually sent
to extra innings again.
Dominican pushed across two runs in the top of the 10th and the
Warriors were unable to answer as they fell, 6-4. The Stars scored
twice and had the bases loaded with nobody out before the Warriors
turned a rare 5U, 5U, 54 triple play to escape further damage.
Sophomore Matt Gowin (Cudahy, Wis./Cudahy) pitched 3.0 innings
of relief in his first appearance of the year, but took the loss as
he let in one earned run. Roeseler finished 2-for-5 with a RBI and
two runs scored.
Ryan Kukla went the distance to earn the win on the mound for
Dominican (8-15, 3-5 NAC), giving up four runs over 10.0 innings.
DiCristofano went 1-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Wisconsin Lutheran (9-6, 3-3 NAC) travels to Fond du Lac, Wis.,
Tuesday to take on Marian (9-5, 3-1 NAC) in a doubleheader. First
pitch from Herr-Baker Field is set for 1 p.m.
