Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team was handed its first doubleheader sweep of the season Friday, falling twice to Gettysburg (Pa.). The Warriors fell to the Bullets 9-5 in game one and 4-2 in game two.
WLC briefly took a 2-1 lead in game one after Gettysburg scored in the second inning. Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) singled home Jake Klemme (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1, and he later scored the Warriors' second run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
The Bullets answered back with two runs of their own in the third for a 3-2 advantage. WLC came back with a run in the fourth when Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) plated Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) with a single to left field to put the score at 3-3.
Gettysburg did its damage in the fourth, crossing home four more times in the inning. Patrick O'Grady got the inning going with a two-run double and later scored a run as the Bullets went up 7-3. The Warriors got another run back in the fifth, coming off a Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) single that scored Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory). WLC continued to chip away in the sixth, scoring again on the combination of an RBI single from Day that plated Klemme.
Gettysburg was able to match the Warriors' run production from the previous two innings in the sixth, scoring twice to double its lead to 9-5.
Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) took the loss, giving up seven runs in 4.0 innings. Nolan Friend (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) made his first appearance of the year, pitching 2.0 innings while not allowing an earned run. Day went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Klemme finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Drew Felsenthal went all 7.0 innings for the Bullets to move to 2-1, striking out 10, including the final three WLC batters. Nate Simon went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, and Mike Kielbasa went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.
Gettysburg slowly began to build a lead in game two, scoring twice through the first three frames for an early score of 2-0. The Bullets added a pair of runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-0.
Youngbeck broke through for the Warriors in the sixth, smacking a long homerun to left field that scored Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) and cut their deficit in half. WLC was unable to mount a comeback in the seventh as it fell 4-2.
Travis Stahulak (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) was charged with the loss, allowing just one earned run in 4.2 innings, striking out three. Andrew Iverson (Janesville, Wis./Craig) provided 2.1 innings of two-hit scoreless relief. Youngbeck concluded the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run.
Eric Hungerford improved to 2-0 for Gettysburg (6-3), scattering four hits over 7.0 innings and striking out nine. Simon scored once and drove in a run and led the team with two hits.
The Warriors (5-3) will conclude play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Saturday with a single game against North Park (5-5). First pitch is set for 8 a.m. CST.
