Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE - Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) hit a walk-off single in a 5-4 game one victory, and Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) threw eight scoreless innings en route to a 5-0 shutout win in game two as the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team swept a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Lakeland Sunday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.
The Muskies (5-8, 0-2 NACC) grabbed the lead in the second inning of game one. Charlie Sparrow hit an RBI single to score one, and a second run came home on an error on the same play to give Lakeland a 2-0 lead.
WLC (7-4, 2-0 NACC) tied it in the bottom of the third as Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) drove in a run with a groundout and Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) clubbed a two-out RBI single to tie the game at two. The Warriors utilized more two-out hitting to take the lead in the fifth. Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) ripped an RBI double to left and scored on Youngbeck's single to put WLC ahead 4-2.
Lakeland scored a pair of unearned runs on a passed ball and an error in the seventh to knot the game up at four.
In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) and Jake Klemme (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) were each hit by a pitch before Vredeveld yanked a single down the left field line to score Wick for the walk-off win.
Josh Ruppel (Belgium, Wis./Cedar Grove-Belgium) (2-1) threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run out of the four runs scored by Lakeland. The sophomore struck out five and walked none. Mattheis, Vredeveld, and Youngbeck collected two hits apiece, and Youngbeck drove in a pair of runs while Mattheis scored twice.
Derek Loomans (1-2) surrendered five runs in 8.1 innings and took the loss for the Muskies. Ryan Boettcher was 3-for-4 with a run scored and Sparrow was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Both teams were scoreless after three innings of game two before Mattheis lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Vredeveld and hand the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Muskies' pitcher Luke Mandich held the Warriors hitless for 4.2 innings before Josiah Boucher (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) cracked a two-run double down the right field line for WLC's first hit and a 3-0 advantage in the fifth.
Ryan Stancl (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) added a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Youngbeck tacked on a run-scoring double in the eighth to push the lead to 5-0.
Day (2-0) tossed eight shutout innings, scattered six hits, struck out two, and walked one. Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout.
Mattheis was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and an RBI, and Youngbeck was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Mandich (1-1) gave up four runs on three hits in six frames for the loss.
Wisconsin Lutheran continues NACC play Monday when it travels to Fond du Lac for a doubleheader against Marian (5-5, 0-0 NACC) starting at 2 p.m. at Herr-Baker Field.
