Offense Erupts In Doubleheader Sweep Over Crusaders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team erupted for 23 runs over two games of its non-conference doubleheader Saturday against Maranatha at Neumann Family Field, winning game one 12-2 in eight innings and game two 11-1 in seven innings.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Warriors plated four runs in its half of the inning thanks to seven stolen bases and a two-RBI single from Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer). WLC jumped out to a 6-1 lead after 3.0 innings with a single run in both the second and third innings.

Wisconsin Lutheran plated another three runs in the fifth, aided by a two-run single from Evan Teske (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran). The Warriors tacked on another two runs in the sixth on RBIs from Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Teske and proceeded to win via a 12-2 run rule in the eighth after scoring a single tally.

Vredeveld, Youngbeck, Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), and Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) each had two hits for the Warriors. Youngbeck and Teske finished with three RBI apiece.

Aaron Kieweg (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) picked up his first collegiate win by tossing all 8.0 innings, giving up just four hits and fanning nine.

Cody Borland and Micah Burdett each went 2-for-4 for the Crusaders (3-9). Caleb Rost was dealt the loss on the hill, allowing nine runs, but just five earned in 5.0 innings.

The story remained much of the same for the Warriors in game two. Clinging to a 2-0 lead through 4.0 innings, WLC plated seven runs in the fifth on four hits, but benefited from a shaky MBU defense with four unearned runs. The Warriors received RBIs in the inning from Zack Skog (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire), Jake Meyer (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton), Ben Rennicke (Grafton, Wis./Living Word Lutheran), and Vredeveld.

Wisconsin Lutheran added single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to again win via run rule 11-1.

Josiah Boucher (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Warriors. Rennicke and Zach Sager (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) added two hits each. Rennicke also drove in two runs.

Noah Schriefer (San Diego, Calif./California Lutheran) earned his first collegiate win on the mound, scattering just two hits over 7.0 innings and striking out three.

Cody Borland went 4.1 innings for Maranatha, surrendering eight runs, but just two earned to take the loss.

Wisconsin Lutheran (10-7, 2-2 NACC) resumes conference play Sunday when it visits Rockford (9-7, 1-3 NACC) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
