Warriors Suffer First Sweep At Hands Of Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team suffered its first doubleheader sweep of the season at the hands of NACC foe Marian Monday afternoon, after its comeback attempt was stopped short in game one 6-3, before dropping game two 8-5.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Marian jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-RBI single by Adam Ryan. 
  • The Sabres pushed across three runs off three hits in the fourth, aided by two Wisconsin Lutheran errors.
  • In the top of the fifth, Marian added an insurance run before the Warriors attempted a comeback in the last of the ninth. 
  • Zack Skog (Hampshire Ill./Hampshire) doubled to right field to score Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer). Korben Biersack (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) singled down the right field line to score Skog to make the score 6-3 in favor of Marian. But Tanner Biwer got the next two batters to line out to preserve the victory.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wisconsin Lutheran took a 2-0 lead in the third off Sam Mattheis' (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) two-RBI double that scored Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Matt Wick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett).
  • The Sabres scored a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to go in front for good. 
  • Marian took advantage of two Warriors errors to score three unearned runs. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth, WLC loaded the bases to score a run on a walk by Wick. 
  • MU capitalized off another Warriors miscue in the seventh to score on a throwing error and a Ty Gellinger double to left center to make it 6-3.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Wisconsin Lutheran plated a pair runs on a Youngbeck groundout to second and a wild pitch that scored Roeseler to pull within 6-5. 
  • Marian added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth on back-to-back RBI doubles.
  • Mantz's walk gave WLC a baserunner in bottom of the ninth, but two straight outs ended a potential rally.

QUICK HITS

  • Biersack led the Warriors in game one with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and an RBI. Skog notched two RBI and a run scored as Youngbeck and Mantz also crossed home plate. 
  • Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four earned runs off eight hits in 8.0 innings. 
  • Ryan went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead Marian.
  • Biwer notched his first win of the season, allowing six hits and three runs to go along with four strikeouts in 9.0 innings pitched. 
  • In game two, Roeseler went 2-for-3 and scored twice to lead WLC. Mattheis notched two RBI.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was hampered by four errors, its most of the season. The Warriors also stranded 11 base runners in the nightcap. 
  • Brock Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) took the loss, scattering eight hits and two earned runs to go along with five K's. 
  • TJ McCoy batted 3-for-5 and had two RBI for the Sabres. Ryan also picked up two hits and two runs. 
  • Jordan DeBoer recorded his first win in 6.0 innings of work, allowing six hits and striking out seven. Earl Vorpagel picked up his first save of the season allowing two hits and two runs while fanning three over the final 3.0 innings.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran travels to Watertown Saturday to face non-conference opponent Maranatha (0-0) for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
