Division I Panthers Survive Warriors' Late Rally

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team nearly overcame a 7-2 deficit against Division I opponent Milwaukee by scoring three runs in the ninth, but the Panthers held off the Warriors 7-6 Wednesday afternoon in an intracity matchup at Henry Aaron Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers provided most of their runs early as they scored six runs on five hits over the first two innings for a 6-0 lead. UWM's Sam Hammer belted a three-run homerun in the first to lead the charge.
  • The Warriors manufactured a run in the third, with Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) stealing second and eventually scoring on a wild pitch.
  • WLC scored its second run in the fifth off of a Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) single that plated Roeseler.
  • Milwaukee tallied its final run of the day in the fifth on an RBI double by Eric Solberg.
  • Roeseler crossed home for the third time in the seventh on a passed ball to trim the deficit to 7-3.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth and Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) drove in a pair with a one-out RBI single that plated Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Zach Szalacinski (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield). UWM's Justin Jaquish forced the final two Warriors hitters to groundout to close out the game with the tying run stranded at second. 

QUICK HITS

  • Mattheis and Roeseler both went 2 for 3 with two walks. Roeseler scored four of the Warriors' six runs. The duo also combined to swipe five bases.
  • Noah Schriefer (San Diego, Calif./California Lutheran) was handed the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) in two innings. Four Warriors relievers combined for 5.0 shutout innings.
  • The Panthers edged the Warriors in the hit column, 9-8.
  • UWM was led by Ryan McShane who went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • Joe Pavlovich picked up the win after striking out three and allowing a hit in the first inning.
  • Six Panthers pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts, including eight from Austin Schulfer
