Raiders Shock Warriors With Senior Day Sweep

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team suffered a setback in its bid for the NACC Tournament as the visiting MSOE Raiders swept the Warriors 4-2 and 3-2 Saturday on Senior Day at Neumann Family Baseball Field.

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • MSOE took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single after three straight batters reached base with two outs.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran plated both of its runs in the game in its half of the first after benefiting from three Raiders errors. Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added an RBI single in the frame with two outs for WLC's second run.
  • The Raiders knotted the score at 2-2 in the second after another two-out hit, an RBI single from Ryan Newman.
  • The game remained scoreless for the next four innings before MSOE broke through for two runs in the seventh off an RBI double and successful squeeze bunt for the 4-2 lead. MSOE stranded the bases loaded to end the frame.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran threatened as it loaded the bases with just one out in the eighth, but couldn't plate any runs across as the Raiders escaped the jam.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game two was scoreless for the first three innings before the Raiders reached the scoring column first again with two runs in the fourth on a wild pitch and RBI single.
  • The Warriors got a run back on the sixth when Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) advanced home on a throwing error following a Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) flyout.
  • The Raiders responded with a run in the very next half inning with a two-out RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
  • Mattheis cut WLC's deficit to one run in the eighth with a two-out RBI single that scored Korben Biersack (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield).
  • WLC was retired in order in the ninth as MSOE swept the Forest Green and White for the first time since the teams joined the NACC.

QUICK HITS

  • Mantz and Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) had two hits apiece for the Warriors in the opener. Three other players recorded one hit each.
  • Newman and Ryan Miller tallied two hits each for the Raiders.
  • MSOE out-hit WLC 9-7.
  • In 7.0 innings of work, Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) allowed four earned runs off nine hits to suffer the defeat on the mound.
  • MSOE's Brandon McCumber did not allow an earned run in 7.0 innings to win for the third time this season.
  • The Raiders committed five errors in game one.
  • The Warriors were limited to just four hits in the nightcap off Raiders' starter Michael Boehmer, who went 8.0 innings and struckout three. The four hits came off the bats of four different players.
  • Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) gave up nine hits, but allowed just three runs in the loss.
  • Newman earned his second save of the day with a scoreless ninth.
  • McCumber and Trevor Symbal had two hits each for MSOE.
  • The Warriors honored their 13 seniors prior to the start of the doubleheader.
