Warriors Shutout Regents For NACC Series Split

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team bounced back from its 7-1 game one loss to Rockford on Monday by defeating the Regents 7-0 in the second game of their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Aviators Stadium.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Following a scoreless opening inning, the Regents plated four runs off four hits in the top of the second highlighted by Cole Logemann's two-out, two-run single.
  • The Warriors got a run back in their half of the second when Brock Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) singled home Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran), who started off the inning with a double.
  • Rockford pushed its lead to 6-1 in the fifth on a wild pitch and RBI single. The Regents plated their final run in the ninth on a RBI single to make the final score 7-1.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wisconsin Lutheran took a 1-0 lead in the third when Brett Youngbeck (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) singled in Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia). Korben Biersack's (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield) RBI double scored Mantz in the fifth to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.
  • WLC made it 5-0 in the sixth on four hits, including RBI's from Youngbeck, Mantz, and Brock Vredeveld.
  • The Warriors scored their final two runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Mattheis.

QUICK HITS

  • Youngbeck and Biersack each had two hits to lead the Warriors in the opener.
  • Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) suffered his second straight defeat on the mound. In 8.0 innings pitched, the senior right-hander allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits. He struckout four and walked one.
  • Michael Murray improved to 5-0 on the season after tossing 8.0 innings of six-hit ball. He struckout five, did not walk a batter, and allowed just one run.
  • Robert Smith went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Regents, who tallied eight hits in the game.
  • Mattheis led the Warriors' 14-hit parade in game two by going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Five other players had two hits each.
  • Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) improved to 3-0 after tossing his second complete game of the season. The senior scattered eight hits and fanned four.
  • Smith tallied three of the Regents' eight hits. Adam O'Malley was handed the loss after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up two runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
  • The Warriors stranded 12 baserunners, but turned four double-plays in game two.
