Late Outburst Leads To Series Split With Stars

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team ended NACC play Friday at Dominican by earning a series split, winning game one 14-4, before dropping game two 4-1 at Boomers Stadium.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wisconsin Lutheran got off to a quick start, as Brandon Mantz (West Bend, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) singled home Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) for an early 1-0 lead.
  • Dominican answered back with two runs on a fielder's choice and a single to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Warriors went in front for good in the third, scoring three runs as Mantz added two more RBIs with a double to left and Brock Vredeveld's (Waterloo, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) RBI single.
  • The game was scoreless until the eighth when WLC added four runs on four hits led by a Jake Grollo (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) two-RBI double and Brett Youngbeck's (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) bases loaded walk.
  • The Warriors broke the game open in the ninth, scoring six additional runs on three hits.
  • Zack Skog (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) had a two-RBI single and Aaron Roeseler (Watertown, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Sam Mattheis (Rosendale, Wis./Laconia) contributed a pair of sacrifice flies. 
  • Jaime Paumen (Glencoe, Minn./Silver-Lake) pitched a complete game to pick up his fourth win on the year.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The game remained scoreless until the fourth when Dominican scored three runs off four hits which was highlighted by an RBI triple and RBI double on back-to-back hits. 
  • The Stars pushed across an insurance run in the eighth using a sac-fly to open up a 4-0 advantage.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran attempted another ninth-inning comeback as it left the bases loaded, but was able to avoid the shutout on a Youngbeck RBI single that scored Roeseler.

QUICK HITS

  • Mantz went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in the opener for the Warriors and Brock Vredeveld was 3-for-4. 
  • Quinlan Milne Rojek was 2-for-3 with a walk for the Stars. 
  • WLC out-hit DU 14-5. 
  • This was the fifth time this season that the Warriors won by 10+ runs. 
  • Paumen picked up his fourth win on the year, going 9.0 innings allowing four runs on five hits. 
  • Chance Elmund took the loss for Dominican as he allowed six runs in 7.0 innings pitched.
  • Mattheis was 3-for-4 in the nightcap for WLC. 
  • The Stars had three players who recorded two hits each.
  • DU out-hit WLC 10-5. 
  • Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) was dealt the loss in 4.0 innings of work allowing three earned runs on seven hits. 
  • Milne Rojeck earned his second win of the season working 9.0 innings with no earned runs and five hits.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran concludes its 2015 season Tuesday with a single non-conference game vs. North Central (Ill.) (24-13). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Neumann Family Baseball Field.
