Warriors Split Doubleheader With Wilmington, Alvernia

FT. MYERS, Fla. – The Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning against Wilmington (Ohio) to earn a split in a pair of games in Ft. Myers on Thursday. The Warriors defeated the Fightin' Quakers 5-4 before dropping game two to Alvernia 15-8 at Terry Park.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Warriors scored three runs off three hits in the top of the eighth to complete the comeback against Wilmington. Matt Wick (Bartlett, Wis./Bartlett) scored the game-winning run on a fielding error.
  • KJ Banse (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and Jake Grollo (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) both went 2-for-4 in the contest. Grollo scored a run and Banse picked up a run and an RBI. Curtis Engelbrecht (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Northland Lutheran) scored two runs and collected an RBI, while Wick tripled and batted in one run.
  • Engelbrecht received a no-decision after 6.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs. Noah Schriefer (San Diego, Calif./California Lutheran) picked up his first win of the season, tossing 3.0 innings allowing three hits and a run.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alvernia scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back, winning 15-8 over Wisconsin Lutheran.
  • Josiah Boucher (Menasha, Wis./Menasha), Grollo, Engelbrecht, and Brett Jakel (Reeseville, Wis./Waterloo) all recorded two hits in the contest.
  • Sid Lehman (Mayville,Wis./Mayville took the loss for the Warriors, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing eig)ht runs. Scott Kamholtz (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) pitched 4.0 innings in relief for WLC.

FOR THE FOES

  • Gage Bley was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Tyler Schrock went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Wilmington.
  • Corey Walker started on the mound for the Fightin' Quakers, allowing three earned runs in 7.1 innings. Jared Ferenchak was dealt the loss, pitching 1.2 innings.  
  • Connor Boyle went 5-for-6 in the leadoff spot for Alvernia, scoring three runs and collecting two RBI.
  • John Catchmark earned the win for the Crusaders, pitching 5.0 innings allowing three earned runs and striking out three.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran continues its spring trip Friday with games against Hiram (0-6) at 11 a.m. CST and Bluffton (2-4) at 2 p.m. CST.
