Softball Sweeps Blue Angels Behind Strong Pitching

MILWAUKEE - Backed by a pair of strong outings in the circle, the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team swept non-conference opponent Mount Mary Tuesday at Neumann Family Field, securing a 9-1 game one victory in six innings and an 8-0 game two triumph in five innings.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wisconsin Lutheran plated two runs in the second and third innings, four in the fourth and a final tally in the sixth as the Warriors defeated Mount Mary 9-1 in six innings.
  • Kaitlyn Robison (Andalusia, Ill./Rockridge), Libby Schellpfeffer (Mayville, Wis./Mayville), Taylor Bjork (Horicon, Wis./Horicon), and Abby Mahsem (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) each tallied two hits in the contest.
  • Cassie Arns (McHenry, Ill./West), Schellpfeffer, Bjork, and Mahsem had an RBI apiece in game one.
  • Arns earned her third win of the season for WLC, pitching 6.0 innings allowing one run off three hits and striking out nine.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Warriors scored in every frame against the Blue Angels, including three runs in the bottom of the fourth on their way to an 8-0 victory in five innings.  
  • Schellpfeffer collected two more hits in game two, scoring two runs and collecting two RBI. Rebecca Yniguez (Wildomar, Calif./California Lutheran) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored.
  • Mahsem tossed a complete-game shutout in 5.0 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight.

FOR THE FOES

  • Taylor Yordt had a hit and an RBI in game one for Mount Mary.
  • Nicole Festge took the loss for the Blue Angels, pitching 5.1 innings allowing 12 hits and three earned runs.
  • Ashley Contreras collected the only hit for MMU in game two. She also was dealt the loss pitching 4.0 innings allowing eight hits and seven earned runs.
  • Mount Mary was hampered by nine errors between the two contests.

UP NEXT

  • The Warriors are scheduled to open conference play Saturday April 2 when they host Rockford (1-9, 0-0 NACC) for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
