Baseball Rolls To Non-Conference Sweep Over Carroll

MILWAUKEE – Bolstered behind strong starts from Curtis Engelbrecht (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Northland Lutheran) and Sid Lehman (Mayville, Wis./Mayville), the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader against Carroll 9-2 and 7-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Warriors took advantage of two errors by the Pioneers in the opening inning when Ryan Stancl (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) reached base on an error scoring Brett Jakel (Reeseville, Wis./Waterloo). 
  • Two more errors proved costly for the Pioneers in the second as an RBI single from KJ Banse (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and an RBI off an error off the bat of Engelbrecht gave WLC a 3-0 lead.
  • The Pioneers got on the board when an RBI single from Hunter Frey scored Ryan Hetherington.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs on five hits and three errors to extend the lead to 9-1. 
  • Kasey Zdroik (Plainfield, Wis./Tri-County) plated Stancl and Lehman on a single up the middle. Josiah Boucher (Menasha, Wis./Menasha) kept the scoring going when he connected on a two-RBI single to right center. Boucher would later score on an error.
  • Scott Kamholtz (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) came in for the final three innings, earning the save while allowing only one run.
  • Engelbrecht collected his first win of the season, throwing 4.0 innings and allowing one run on five hits.
  • The Warriors racked up 11 hits and capitalized on eight Pioneers' errors. Jakel, Colton Tisch (Genoa City, Wis./Badger), and Zdroik all had two hits in the game.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • The pitchers controlled the game at the start, as the score remained 0-0 until the fifth.
  • Mike Kosinski (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) got the rally going for the Warriors with a walk. 
  • After Jakel came in as a pinch-runner and a single by Kyle Koth (Zion, Ill./Kenosha St. Joseph), Jake Schwall (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) gave WLC the lead on a single up the middle.
  • Banse extended the lead with a two-run double down the right field line, and later scored with Engelbrecht on another two-run single from Stancl.
  • Carroll finally cracked through against Lehman in the sixth, scoring a run off an RBI double from Joe Huss.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran answered with insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning as Koth and Banse added RBIs to give the Warriors a 7-1 lead.
  • Cameron Paladines (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) came in to record the final three outs and seal the victory.
  • Tisch, Banse, and Koth led the team with two hits apiece, while Schwall reached base in all three plate appearances.
  • Lehman recorded his first victory on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing one run on five hits.

FOR THE FOES

  • Hetherington went 3-for-3 in game one for the Pioneers, and Clayton Schmitt added a pair of hits.
  • Carl Formento suffered the loss in 3.0 innings of work, allowing 9 runs, but just three earned.
  • Joe Huss and Jacob Langford collected two hits for Carroll in game two. Huss recorded the only RBI for CU.
  • Aaron Roth received a no-decision in the game, allowing only one hit in 3.0 innings. Alex Morland suffered the loss in 1.1 innings of work giving up five runs.

UP NEXT

  • Wisconsin Lutheran returns to NACC action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to the Rock Sports Complex in Franklin to take on MSOE (15-13, 6-4 NACC). The Raiders last played on Sunday and swept Marian, 13-5 and 15-3. Live audio and stats will be available at WLCSports.com.
